"The photo on the card shows a boy who was found murdered, a year ago, on the grounds of a girls' boarding school in the leafy suburbs of Dublin. The caption says I KNOW WHO KILLED HIM. Detective Stephen Moran has been waiting for his chance to get a foot in the door of Dublin's Murder Squad--and one morning, sixteen-year-old Holly Mackey brings him this photo. "The Secret Place," a board where the girls at St. Kilda's School can pin up their secrets anonymously, is normally a mishmash of gossip and covert cruelty, but today someone has used it to reignite the stalled investigation into the murder of handsome, popular Chris Harper. Stephen joins forces with the abrasive Detective Antoinette Conway to find out who and why. But everything they discover leads them back to Holly's close-knit group of friends and their fierce enemies, a rival clique--and to the tangled web of relationships that bound all the girls to Chris Harper. Every step in their direction turns up the pressure. Antoinette Conway is already suspicious of Stephen's links to the Mackey family. St. Kilda's will go a long way to keep murder outside their walls. Holly's father, Detective Frank Mackey, is circling, ready to pounce if any of the new evidence points toward his daughter. And the private underworld of teenage girls can be more mysterious and more dangerous than either of the detectives imagined." --… (més)

Struggled with all the dialogue in this one, but the story won me over in the very end. ( )

I love Irish author Tana French. Her prose is like poetry which she uses to bewitch you while she takes you on a crazy ride over the course of the pages. When I read fiction, I want it to punch me in the gut, to leave me breathless, to be so good that I have to pry the book out of my own hand to put it down and get some work done. French never disappoints.

French usually includes a bit of the supernatural in her books, which made me uncomfortable at first. What - my forensic mystery isn't all cut and dry? Using your imagination is required to fully understand the aspects of the case - gasp! Now I find that I enjoy that little extra edge. It makes you think all the more, it adds extra layers to the plot, it makes the story more of an experience than your average journey in reading.

I can't recommend French's books enough. If you haven't read her before, I would suggest starting at the beginning, with "In the Woods" and reading your way through to her most recent. Have you read any of her books before? Let me know what you think. Do you know of any authors with similar styles - I'm always looking, please let me know! ( )

The Secret Place by Tana French is the 5th entry in her Dublin Murder Squad series. I had a rather mixed reaction to this book, on the one hand I was frustrated by the claustrophobic setting of a girls school and the repetition of questions that were put to the 8 girls who were of the most interest to the police. I often found myself checking to see how many pages were left. On the other hand, I was totally immersed in the setting and there was no way that I was going to stop reading until I found out who the murderer was.

It’s a year after a student from a nearby boy’s school was found brutally murdered on the grounds of St. Kilda’s, a posh girl’s school. A student, whose father happens to be a policemen, comes to the police with a picture of the murdered boy with the words “I know who killed Chris” written across it. This gives Stephen Moran the chance he’s been looking for to cross over from Cold Cases to the Murder Squad. He persuades the lead detective Antoinette Conway to include him in the investigation. Together they spend a very long day interviewing the 8 girls who had an opportunity to post the picture of the murder victim.

This book is about both the lies and secrets that swirl around a group of teenage girls and their friendship and loyalty to one another. French, with her detailed plotting and literary writing style rolls out the story in two time-lines, the on-going investigation into the murder and the events that led up to a boy being murdered. Although I wish the book had been about 75 to 50 pages shorter, The Secret Place is nonetheless a powerful and gripping addition to the Dublin Murder Squad series. ( )

Hmm, it started out as an interesting and intriguing read but I just felt it dragged on for maybe 50 pages longer than necessary. It seemed as if the author were trying to keep us guessing but honestly, every single character was put up as the potential criminal and each time it felt like a stretch.

A couple of aspects had me scratching my head and I'd love to know why the author didn't have the police triangulate on the mystery phone, since it was obviously switched on and in use periodically. Also, the victim was depicted initially as an unpopular nerd then somehow became the muscular, tall hearthrob in the space of a few months.
