I originally rated this book four stars. I really liked it, but there are a few things about it that left me wanting. Since that original reading, though, I've come back to this book at least three times and unless I die in the very near future, I will definitely reread it yet again. Any book that can elicit four or more rereadings from someone with kids and a grad degree in the works deserves the full five stars. ( )

Smart, fun sci-fi tinged thriller. ( )

Great book, psychological thriller, recommended for anyone interested in poetry, linguistics or psychology. ( )

I had previously read Jennifer Government, and rated it highly, so I figured I'd give this book a shot. It's nothing like Jennifer, but a very compelling read. The basic conceit is clever, the characters are well-written, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat to the very end, with many twist, turns, and fake-outs. The non-chronological story telling can be a bit disorienting, probably especially so in the audiobook. ( )

I wanted this to be slightly better than it was. I enjoyed it a lot, hence the 4 star rating, but based on how much I have enjoyed Max Barry's previous books and the description of this book, I thought it would be a clear 5 star book. It ended up being around 4.5, but I rounded down. I will be interested to see if he stays in the thriller genre or if he returns to his humor based works. ( )

Poets—yes, you read that right, poets—are specially-trained operatives who can change the minds of anyone, provided they use the right words in the right way. This two-tiered narrative gives us Emily, who has been recruited to join the mind-control group, and Wil, who is being tortured when the book opens and as his amnesia recedes, we see more and more of his link to the poets. ... As always, Barry is a social critic first and foremost. The power of his work comes from the absurdist take he has on already-absurd elements of our consumer-driven, advertising-fueled culture. Mark this one up as another winner in the Barry canon.

So there are several different genres and tones jostling for prominence within “Lexicon”: a conspiracy thriller, an almost abstract debate about what language can do, and an ironic questioning of some of the things it’s currently used for. The sheer noise of the thriller plot and its inevitable violence end up drowning out some of the other arguments Barry is making.

Modern-day sorcerers fight a war of words in this intensely analytical yet bombastic thriller.
