I really loved this book and then KABLOOMERS, DESTRUCTION. but it was gorgeous and full of stupid sad people, and a huge ass dog, and that was nice. ultimately better than most of our book club books, despite the shit that everyone hated. ( )

Ava's family has never been "normal" by any standard, but that's just how it has always been. Her great-grandmother was so depressed she turned herself to ash. Her great aunt turned into a canary. Her grandmother was considered a witch, and her mother never got over her first love. When she is born with wings, it just becomes another strange thing that happens in her family.

Eerie and suspenseful, Ava's story is creepy and macabre, with plenty of blood and gore to go around. Not for the faint of heart, this would be a great book to recommend for older fans of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children who are looking for a more literary read.

I think this would be more appealing to a wider range of readers if it had a different cover. Though pretty in its simplicity, it is also slightly boring for those looking for a little more excitement. ( )

This book was beautifully written and was incredibly melancholic. I enjoyed reading it however I felt that the characters were underdeveloped.

I felt like I only got a tiny morsel of a delicious cake, I really wanted to eat the whole thing.

A truly beautiful book though and well worth the read. Quirky, strange and eloquent. ( )

Love makes us such fools. ( )

I'm currently on a book buying ban which means I've been desperately going to the school library every few days in order to find a few good books (even though I have plenty to read at home due to why I had to put myself on a book buying ban) and one of the books I managed to take with me before I borrowed half a shelf, was this one. I wasn't exactly sure what to except from it; other than that I mistook the 'of' for a & which meant I thought it was a book about two girls falling in love. But I don't mind because I got something very good despite the misunderstanding.

Ava Lavender was born with brown wings. Her mother tried to protect her from the outside world by keeping her and her twin brother Henry within their home for the first fifteen years of their lives. Because the Lavender family is not unfamiliar with the harsh world and how everything in it will consume if you aren't careful; even love. That might even be the worst part. Because it is never just simply love, it's foolish love. It breaks you when you least expect it and leaves you with an open wound for the rest of your life.

At least that's what Ava's mother and grandmother seem to believe. They have both loved, and always lost. Her mother still waits for the boy who will never return; and her grandmother has long since learned that only the foolish let simple things like feelings get a hold of you. But one summer night when Ava is sixteen will change everything they ever thought they knew about love.

Oh, wow. This story was definitely what I expected and I'm thankful for that. It was a nice surprise; one that I'm pretty sure will linger for quite a while.

I read a couple of reviews after finishing the book and it seems like most people dislike how it didn't just tell the story of Ava; but of her grandmother and mother as well. Actually, even if Ava was the narrator and main character, the book was nearly as much about them as her. I quite enjoyed that. I'm a sucker for history and family trees and all that. The only reason I've ever played The Sims was to be able to create family trees with generation after generation recorded. It's such a powerful thing, you know? I love to hear stories about what kind of dancing my nan would do on summer nights when she was my age; or how my mum would spend winter days with her nan in a sauna before running out to take a short, cold swim in the snow. They live on in the stories. I got quite a few such vibes from this book; and it got me caught up in the story quite quickly.

It's a beautiful but tragic story about life and love; but most importantly, what it means to be a human with all these intense feelings and thoughts. It is not a very happy story most of the time but it's definitely a powerful one. ( )
