This book started out strong and the idea of someone not standing up for a display of patriotism is certainly relevant today. However, towards the middle to second third of the book, Arnold’s life on the lam started to become a little unbelievable. I did enjoy the final few pages and how the author has left the resolution of the story up to the reader. *I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review* Aquesta ressenya s'ha escrit per al programa Donatius de membres de LibraryThing. I had a horrible time finishing this book. One of the things I try to determine is the author's message, which I can only assume is "the world doesn't make any sense." While this is true, I don't want it in my books where I go to escape. Aquesta ressenya s'ha escrit per al programa Donatius de membres de LibraryThing. The Man Who Wouldn’t Stand Up is a mix of life and unpredictability. Starting with the main character not standing up at a baseball game the storyline of the character then spirals down as he is then labeled as a terrorist and goes into hiding. These spirals leave the reader confused as the main character is taken to extremes such as becoming a nude bandit. The end of the book is just that an ending that lacks emotion and closure for the reader. Ultimately this book lacks relatability for the reader and at parts makes the reader question whether society could ever be this way. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
From the acclaimed author of The Biology of Luck comes a hilarious, Kafkaesque satire Arnold Brinkman is a shy and retiring botanist; he loves his plants more than his country. But when his refusal to stand for the national anthem at a baseball game causes a major media incident, he is thrown into a world of pushy patriots, preachers, and press. And it's not going to get any easier when he refuses to apologize. A hilarious bullet into the heart of modern America, this novel mixes the literary sensibilities of Jonathan Franzen with the raucous satire of D.B.C. Pierre, and was the recipient of the Dundee International Book Prize. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
