Rosemary's young, just at college, and she's decided not to tell anyone a thing about her family. So we're not going to tell you too much either: you'll have to find out for yourselves what it is that makes her unhappy family unlike any other. Rosemary is now an only child, but she used to have a sister the same age as her, and an older brother. Both are now gone - vanished from her life... There's something unique about Rosemary's sister, Fern. So now she's telling her story; a looping narrative that begins towards the end, and then goes back to the beginning. Twice... It's funny, clever, intimate, honest, analytical and swirling with ideas that will come back to bite you. We hope you enjoy it, and if, when you're telling a friend about it, you do decide to spill the beans about Fern, don't feel bad. It's pretty hard to resist.… (més)

Rosemary Cooke is telling the story of her sister, who mysteriously disappeared one day, and her brother who took off soon after. About a quarter of the way through the book there is a revelation out of left field about the sister, and the whole novel takes a distinct turn.
Fowler keeps the pages turning with wonderful characterizations and plot twiists that keep you guessing. Recommended! ( )

I probably would have enjoyed this a lot more if it hadn't been the audio version. Personally I didn't get on with the voice at all. A dreary monotone most of the time. ( )

Now, I'm a big fan of ape language experiments; I wrote papers about them in college, I've watched all the movies and read all the books and listened to the podcasts, etc. I've come to believe that, while we may be able to teach them rudimentary communication, having them live with human families just isn't possible. They aren't humans; they're apes. We're just confusing them and hurting them by making it impossible for them to rejoin others of their kind. I'm not sure what the point of this book, politically, is on this issue, but it didn't change my mind.

A lot of people and press are saying to go into this blind, and on one hand it works: you definitely feel more of Fern's presence and her place as Rosie's sister. On the other hand, it's not really necessary or a huge reveal (and makes talking about it harder!).

All this secrecy, then, hurts the book's message. How can we talk about animal cruelty and extremist groups and how fricking annoying Harlow is without "spoiling" anybody? Because, no doubt, what happened to Fern is unforgivable and heartbreaking, but what else could they have done with her? She thought she was human, but was too dangerous and "wild" to live with her human family. But abandoning her to the mercies of a stranger pack is not the answer!

The writing is long and winding and a little pretentious, even though there's a fair explanation for that. I just wished it hit a little harder. ( )

Not sure about this one really wanted to love it but I have to admit not so much. it was OK and I like the way it was written I do love a surprise. ( )

What started as a reluctant book club read turned out to be one of my favorites of the year! I was swept right up by Rosemary’s dry narration and her extraordinary yet completely recognizable family. This book is clever, funny, achingly sad, and simply irresistible. Four and a half stars. ( )

Fowler, best known for her novel “The Jane Austen Book Club,” is a trustworthy guide through many complex territories: the historical allure and dicey ethics of experimental psychology, not to mention academic families and the college towns of Bloomington and Davis.

... Your experience as apes, gentlemen—to the extent that you have something of that sort behind you—cannot be more distant from you than mine is from me. But it tickles at the heels of everyone who walks here on earth, the small chimpanzee as well as the great Achilles.

What I found in books was daughters indulged and daughters oppressed, daughters who spoke loudly and daughters made silent. I found daughters imprisoned in towers, beaten and treated as servants, beloved daughters sent off to keep house for hideous  monsters. Mostly, when girls were sent away, they were orphans, like Jane Eyre and Anne Shirley, but not always. Gretel was taken with her brother into the forest and abandoned there. Dicey Tillerman was left with her siblings in a parking lot at a shopping mall. Sara Crewe, whose father adored her, was still sent away to live at school without him. All in all, there was a wide range of possibility, and Fern's treatment fit easily inside it.
Where you succeed will never matter so much as where you fail.
