teen fiction (steampunk mystery/adventure with an accidental time traveler, two strong female protagonists, and a hint of possible romance). This took a little while to get going, and I almost gave up on it, but once established was an enjoyable adventure. ( )

I liked the originality of the characters within this book. The idea of taking two older texts (Bram Stoker's Drakula and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories) and creating (and in some cases re-creating) characters was very original. In this late 17th century setting in England, we are introduced to Evangeline Stoker - the sister and Vampire hunter of Bram Stoker, and Mina Holmes - the niece of Sherlock Holmes. These two young women are very smart/strong who have the solve a mystery for the queen of England while also balancing what could be considered the beginning of relationships with young men. There is also a little bit of time travel in this steam punk setting which is another thing entirely.

This steam punk setting at times felt a little over the top. The descriptions became a little distracting at times when they were overly described and when they didn't feel necessary within the plot/scene. For example, Mina enters a house where her coat/umbrella were taken by a team operated umbrella stand. (Were any of these items real things and are the in depth descriptions needed? Not necessarily, but some of them are kind of cool to read about even though there were some that I just couldn't envision.)

There were also a few times that I felt like the pacing was a little off. Some parts were very slow and detail oriented while others felt like they were sudden and fast paced. A few of these times left me going back and re-reading a few paragraphs because I felt like I had missed something between a discussion and an action scene.

Apart from those feel issues/complaints, I thought the story was pretty well written and at a very intellectual level (you should see some of the vocab words scattered throughout!). The lexile of this book is actually quite high even though the content is something that just about any middle school aged person could handle. ( )

Kind of thin. OK, but not super engaging. Steampunk story about niece of Sherlock Holmes and sister of Bram Stoker.

This last week, I've had the chance to listen to 2 full books, get well into another and listen to one that I couldn't stand SO MUCH, that not only don't I know the plot, but I've returned it to Audible.

The story idea is about the niece of Sherlock Holmes and the heir to the Stoker house, both girls, going off to do something. But in the... Oh, 20 min or so that I listened, Miss Holmes 'deduced' seven or eight times!! No joke, in every scene she'd look it over and figure it all out, before showing off in her words.

So... Yeah. Drove me kinda batty. I mean, I listened to an Urban Fantasy/Religious story, a steampunk Harlequin romance, and have started another revisionist history urbanish fantasy book, so I'm open to ideas. And despite the bad reviews, I wanted to like this story. But I wondered if half of it was going to be her thinking 'By this, I know its this... And that's a sign of this.. Yep, its this.' then saying what she's discovered. ( )
