I think this book was very insightful in a lighthearted and developmentally appropriate way. While it was essentially a biography about Mambo King Tito Puente, it was a fun and easy read. Something that young children might be able to comprehend. The pictures were interesting and attractive, the story was easy to follow and developmentally appropriate for the age group. ( ) This story, like the one on Carlos Santana is great way to discuss culturally significant artists to young children without presenting vocabulary that they do not understand. Music connects us to others in so many ways and so many changes have happened because of the arts, and I think this story does a great job of discussing this. As soon as I saw this book, it brought me back to my childhood. I grew up in Little Havana in Miami, Fl, where there was a strong Hispanic influence. From the food to the music. I remember watching Tito Puente playing with Celia Cruz in my living room with my parents. This book was very accurate with his portrayal and his musical influence in the Latin community. I learned that he lived in Spanish Harlem, which I never knew. I liked how the book is bilingual. The text is both in English and Spanish. The pictures and colors of this book reminded me of my cultural background, giving me a feeling of comfort. This will be a book that I will introduce to my students. In this vibrant bilingual picture book biography of musician Tito Puente, readers will dance along to the beat of this mambo king's life. Tito Puente loved banging pots and pans as a child, but what he really dreamed of was having his own band one day. From Spanish Harlem to the Grammy Awards-and all the beats in between-this is the true life story of a boy whose passion for music turned him into the "King of Mambo."
