Oh my god! Will Cleo and Lucia be friends? That would make a power duo! I’d love tam hat but I feel like even with them as enemies that’d be awesome! I’m off to read the third one! ( )

This book is so damn good. The plot is is average but the characters are so complicated and confusing which just makes the book much better. Even the writing style can't help but pull you in.

There are so many deaths that it pierces my heart every time. All my favorite minor characters are getting killed but I really have to say that this series is not what I expected.

This is not a casual read. I have invested in a new fandom and I don't regret it. ( )

I actually quite enjoyed this one. This series isn't necessarily all that great, but it's certainly addictive.

I don't think this is anything out of the ordinary. I like the characters well enough. The world is fairly well developed. The writing is easy to read. The plot, while unoriginal, is certainly gripping and well done. Everything's fine.

But nothing's amazing.
I actually really like Cleo, and also a couple of the side characters. But the others? I just don't care. Jonas isn't bad... he's just not anything special. Lucia's fine, but she's just that. Fine. Magnus is, to be quite honest, a jerk, and I actually really dislike him. (Unpopular opinion, I know.)
The world has nothing to differentiate itself from all the other fantasy worlds out there.
Same with the writing.
And the plot.

Also um... It felt to me like there was a lot of unnecessary deaths. Look, I read dark books. Characters dying doesn't bother me. But... they usually feel like they have a point. This just felt like the author went "Hmmm, I need make this more interesting, what should I do? Oh, I know! Let's pointlessly kill off another character! For absolutely no reason!"
It was just too much.

Overall though, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I'm definitely going to continue with the series. It's just nothing special. ( )

Rebel Spring, the sequel to Morgan Rhodes' riveting Falling Kingdoms, was released in early December 2013 and from the get-go it was worth the wait. With superb writing, intriguing characters and constant twists and turns in the plot that will keep the readers on the edge of their seats, Rebel Springs gives the target audience (Young Adult/New Adult) a lot of fantasy, a lot of murders and a helluva lot of action.

What I found increasingly interesting though, is how the characters grow in the books. Falling Kingdoms showed a different Prince Magnus to what we are shown in Rebel Spring. At first he was arrogant, annoying and somewhat unlikable, but his growth shows that he's much more than a spoiled little rich boy that was abused by his power-hungry father. Princess Cleo, the girl everyone is hoping would succeed in her task of getting back her throne, was slightly naive in Falling Kingdom, but in Rebel Spring she takes charge in order to save Auranos. Lucia wasn't seen too often in Rebel Spring, but I'm waiting to see how she goes postal in book 3 of the Falling Kingdoms series, and then we have Jonas... Now, in Falling Kingdoms Jonas was the rebellious guy that hated Cleo and everything Auranos stood for, right? He was charming, gutsy, righteous and he's never been afraid to speak his mind, which appealed to me in numerous ways. However, for some inexplicable reason, Morgan Rhodes turned our little rebel into a slightly unlikable guy. I mean, sure he's the leader of the rebels, but he's not coming up with any good ideas anymore and I don't like the fact that Cleo and he became interested in one another. That's just my personal opinion, but keep it in mind...

Other than that, let's take a good look at the less-talked about King Gaius.
King Gaius is an evil overlord, a superb manipulator and a surprisingly patient fellow when it comes to world domination. He's upped his game now that he controls all of Mythica (Auranos, Limeros and Paelsia), but he wants more. He always wants more. This is where Melenia, an elder from the Sanctuary, comes into play. She's also got some world domination plans in mind, but she's obviously using King Gaius to achieve her goals. It's a very complex plot, but hey it's definitely worth a read and I personally can't wait to see what Melenia has in store for him.

Rebel Spring was a great sequel and the story is only getting better from the look of things. So, if you're looking for something that reads a little like Game of Thrones, this is it. Quite honestly, I can't wait for the next Morgan Rhodes book...

I honestly don't have anything to say about this other than I was wholeheartedly uninterested. I didn't care about the characters or what was happening. The politics and plotting wasn't enough to carry me through and I feel like the magic buildup is way too slow. I might give this series another shot at some point, but probably not on audio. ( )
