A bit of a slow burner. I'm definitely more interested in the societal breakdown that the author describes than with the actual case that Palace is trying to solve. This evolving landscape as the asteroid gets closer is so much more terrifying and realistically painted that the police work takes a back seat, and I'm ok with that, as police investigations usually bore me to death. I'm swayed by the ending to the fourth star. Not sure about the all purpose provider who rides up in the wagon but the surprise was worth it. ( )

The first book in this series relied heavily on its premise to catch and hold the reader's interest. That worked okay, but for book two we need to care more about the characters. Winters tries to build up the main character Harry, with lots of flashbacks to Harry's past, focused especially on his relationship with his sister, but it didn't work for me. I don't understand his motivation, at all, why he cares. "Civilization is just a bunch of promises, that’s all it is"? This is Winters talking, not Harry. Add to this a scattered plot, full of holes, and a cliffhanger ending (?!). It makes for an unsatisfying novel.

> Among my regrets about what has just unfolded is that Brett never did ask me why I had come to find him, why I cared. I had my answer all figured out. Because a promise is a promise, Officer Cavatone, and civilization is just a bunch of promises, that’s all it is. A mortgage, a wedding vow, a promise to obey the law, a pledge to enforce it. And now the world is falling apart, the whole rickety world, and every broken promise is a small rock tossed at the wooden side of its tumbling form. ( )

With just 77 days left until an asteroid collides with Earth, former detective Henry Palace is asked by his former babysitter to find her husband, Brett Cavatone, who disappeared without a trace from his job, a common event with the pending apocalypse. Despite the long odds of success, Henry doggedly pursues Brett, a former State trooper, who is off on a mission of his own. His search leads him to reunite with his sister, who provides valuable assistance. Well done, but not as good as the first book. ( )

bookThe days are getting shorter for Henry Palace and the residents of Concord, NH (and the rest of the world, for that matter) as the asteroid Maia relentlessly approaches. If the edges of society were beginning to fray in [b:The Last Policeman|13330370|The Last Policeman (The Last Policeman, #1)|Ben H. [a:Ben H. Winters|735413|Ben H. Winters|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1273516874p2/735413.jpg] lays out a chillingly realistic vision of a pre-apocalyptic world sliding into chaos, a combination of fragile human nature and cynical "realpolitik" government policies that reflect in no uncertain terms the very present problems of our the real world.

As with the first book in this series, the central mystery is less intriguing than the well-realized setting, but Winters keeps the plot chugging along, with the requisite twists and turns, some more realistic than others. The characters continue to be developed and the protagonist Hank Palace reveals himself to be quite an intriguing oddball in the grand tradition of literary detectives.

This series sits halfway between mystery and (light) sci-fi, and I'd recommend it for fans of either genre. ( )

The asteroid is closer than when we last followed Detective Hank Palace in The Last Policeman—it’s just 77 days from hitting Earth and destroying the planet. Hank is now unemployed, forced into retirement, when a woman begs him to find her missing husband. And because Hank is a detective at heart, he’s got no choice. ... Ben H. Winters has a winner in this trilogy, and the middle book exceeds the pleasure of the first. Don’t wait until it’s too late to catch up on the Last Policeman trilogy—the end is coming!
