The mystery and secrets kept me interested. How things were going to turn out once we knew kept me interested. Yet ... it did not end in a way that makes me recommend this book. And what was the meaning of the Tess storyline? There was no way to get Connor into the book without that? I don't know ... didn't fit for me. And getting away with murder? Not my cup of tea. Yes, I know, it wasn't really, but even the tidying up with all the lame "what ifs" was a put off for me. My third and least favorite Liane Moriarty book to read. I did like it enough to give it four stars, but I'm not surprised that this is the one being made into a movie, considering there's more sex and swearing in this one. That said, I still love the way the author writes her characters. Many writers only know how to write the "almost perfect" protagonist, so it's refreshing that Moriarty's skills go beyond this! I often see either myself or people I know in their personalities. Though the events in the book are rather dramatic, the characters' thoughts and reactions are relatable. Imagine that your husband wrote you a letter, to be opened after his death. Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deepest, darkest secret - something with the potential to destroy not just the life you built together, but the lives of others as well. Imagine, then, that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive... Cecilia Fitzpatrick has achieved it all - she's an incredibly successful businesswoman, a pillar of her small community, and a devoted wife and mother. Her life is as orderly and spotless as her home. But that letter is about to change everything, and not just for her: Rachel and Tess barely know Cecilia - or each other - but they too are about to feel the earth-shattering repercussions of her husband's secret. I give Moriarty credit for cleverly weaving three completely different lives into one story with a building climax toward the end of the book. Also find that the husband's secret was somewhat predictable before getting to the actual letter.
I will say that this book does make us think about the reality of our situations and the choices we make. What "would have happened" becomes the underlying motto in this book and makes us question our own "what if?" moments in our lives.
Other than that I would say that the ending was quite fitting and the last chapter was actually very well written and cleverly done.
I'm actually interested in reading some of her other works because there is something unique about the way she intertwines different perspectives. (
