Cath has been writing fanfiction about Simon Snow ever since she read the first book in the series about him, and it has not only made her an excellent writer, but has also earned her a very large fan base online. Her twin sister, Wren, has always been part of her writing process, but now that they are about to embark on their first year of college, Wren does not want to room with her. Cath is devastated, especially since she is scared of what she will face, as well as knowing that they are both leaving their bi-polar dad at home alone. When Cath arrives, she meets her roommate, Reagan, who is mean to her and has a weird boyfriend that keeps hanging around their room. After several disastrous events, the only thing Cath wants is to go home and take care of her dad, but fate, family, and friends convince her to make a different decision.

Cath's story alternates with excerpts of the original Simon Snow novels and Cath's fanfiction, mirroring parallel events and themes as well as symbolism. I've heard great things about this book, but I had trouble identifying with the characters and the Simon Snow stories. However, the deep emotions of the characters comes through loud and clear, making it easy to empathize with them. Moreover, the characters are likable and easy to root for. Overall, this is an enjoyable read that, for me, doesn't quite live up to the hype. ( )

3.75 stars

Cath and Wren are twin sisters and going to college. Not only are they leaving their dad, but Wren has insisted they not be roommates so they can meet new people. Which is fine for outgoing, party-girl Wren, but Cath is a shy nerd. A fanfiction writing nerd, obsessed with Simon Snow, the wildly popular fantasy series, and the last book will be coming out soon. Cath’s new roomate Reagan is distant, but Reagan’s boyfriend is far too friendly – with everyone. Mostly Cath leaves him in the hall if Reagan isn’t home (which is most of the time). Cath is excited to start her Creative Fiction course, though – a higher level class she needed permission to get into.

I really enjoyed the main story of Cath and the events surrounding her. For me, there was far too much Simon Snow, though. I skimmed over almost all of the Simon Snow writings in the book. This is what brought my rating down by a quarter star. I did come to quite like Reagan. I loved Luke! There were some serious topics in the book, but it’s still a lighthearted book with humourous bits thrown in. ( )

***WTF MOMENT AFTER COMPARING MY STATS***
Why did I gave this 5 stars?

...

ah, nostalgie factor. My opinion has changed. I have zero interest in re-reading this beyond some vague feelings of wondering if it would hold up. So my star rating went from 5 stars to 3.5, rounded down. I liked it, would recommend to certain people but it isn't the bestest thing since sliced bread.

***FIRST THOUHTS AFTER FINISHING 13 juli 2017***
I'm having a hard time coming up with a rating for this. I want to say 4.5 stars. But do I round that up or down?

I deeply enjoyed the story but I also got very annoyed at it at times.

Also I got some nostalgic feelings while reading it mixed in with some regret.
I just know I would have loved this to pieces when I was 16/17. I just started reading books in English because I already read the all the Dutch books in the fantasy section. I started with chicklit romances because the language in them was a lot easier than the fantasy ones.

Although I wasn't a heavy Internet user I did began reading stories of people online.

Also Harry Potter. I read those first four books over and over again. And then stole my sisters other three copies.

This would've been the perfect book for me then.

And not because of all the fanfiction stuff. But because of the parent stuff.

This story is so relatable to me. But it never feels. .. heavy. I needed that then but the only way I found that was in the fantasy stories. I never was one for contemporary or literature. Fantasy or romance all the way.

So yeah bit of regret there.

Still. While I'm typing this... I feel clearer what I want to rate this story. Because although I got very annoyed with Levi (how is it possible I ended up liking him?!) And the writing style took me a while to get used to, I loved it. And I know I will read it again in the future because it already feels like an comfort read to me. ( )
