Once and a while a girl needs to sit down with a good rom com and just escape from the world. That time has come form e, and man was this a good choice! To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han is a sweet YA romantic comedy that will make you giggle, remember falling in love all over again and potentially cry some ugly tears. Lara Jean is a sweet girl that we can all relate to in some way. She's living with her Dad and two sisters dealing with life's stresses. Her Mother died when she was younger and her older sister Margot goes off to school in Europe. That's a big change for everyone, but they will learn to adapt. It's weird, but survivable. So, Lara Jean has all these letters she used to write to the guys she liked and then hid them. It's a good way to cope and deal with your feelings, if I'm being honest. But, you know, they sometimes accidentally get released and all the boys find out. It's kind of awkward. So, she has to deal with Josh (Margot's ex), Peter Kavinsky (you had to say his full name every time, it's law) and a collection of other boys. Suddenly, she's fake dating Pterosaur's Kavinsky because he broke up with Genvieve (his long term girlfriend turned ex) and somewhat still having feelings for Josh. It's awkward, it's weird and she might actually still like Peter? But things are gonna get messy. So, positives: It's a sweet romantic comedy that moves at a fast pace and is super easy to read. There's lots of real feelings and experiences throughout the book as well: loss, love, grief, a sibling going off to school. It's an adorable read with very little romance but lots of the chase and fantasizing that high school girls go through. It felt like it was perfect for it's audience. My biggest negative: THAT DARN CLIFFHANGER. Thanks a lot Jenny Han. I do have the next book in my house but REALLY?! I hate cliffhangers! They hurt so much! That means I have to find book three now and it was troublesome hunting down book two! Honestly, the book doesn't really have an ending at all which is even more frustrating. It's fine if you have an ending with a cliffhanger, but NO ENDING AT ALL?! It's frustrating. Also, Lara Jean seems too innocent for her age, but that's just my opinion. Overall, I enjoyed this book! I will definitely be continuing this series and be looking into more books by Jenny Han. I'm totally impressed and adored reading it. To All the Boys I've Loved Before is a great book to sneak away from the world in. Four out of five stars. At first, I thought this book would be just another boring love story but in the end, it turned out to be flabbergasting. In the book, Lara Jean has a hat box she put her love notes in, and one day the hatbox goes missing and everyone gets sent the letters. Lara was now in a mess. One letter was sent to her sister, Margot’s ex-boyfriend. Lara ran up to a guy named Peter Kavinski and hugged him and that’s where they had to act as a fake couple for the rest of the book. Peter wanted to use Lara to get back at his ex Gen and Lara needed a cover-up for the notes. In the middle of the book Margot’s ex came over and kissed Lara. In the end of the book, a lot of stuff happened between Peter, Lara, Margot, and Lara's little sister Kitty. The setting of this book is all over the place from Lara’s house, and Peter’s house to the school and the ski resort. I would recommend the book “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” because the book teaches you a great lesson that not everything is meant to be and you don’t always get what you in the end, but if you aren’t into romance books I would not suggest reading this book. I would also not recommend this book to anyone that doesn’t like reading cursive because all the notes and letters that are written back and forth between the characters are written in cursive.
The book is definitely a fun roller coaster ride of emotions in the best way. You will fall in love with the characters by the end of the first book. The book is so intriguing, it will keep you up wanting more and this is the exact reason why I love that it's a series of three books. I totally recommend this YA romance book. It is sure to get you out of a reading slump. The romantic scenes will have you shrieking in excitement, You’ll want a Peter K of your own by the end of the book. Trigger warnings: Death of a mother, grief and loss depiction
6/10, I've been wanting to read this for a while since I first saw it in one of the two libraries I go to and I didn't know what to expect considering I've never read this series before and now there's a Netflix adaptation but I found myself feeling indifferent at best and iffy at worst due to the issues I found. That being said I won't be continuing with the series. Where do I even begin? Did I mention this had an interesting concept as well but it didn't work out? It starts with the main character Lara Jean Song Covey or Lara for short and she has a quirk that no other character I know of has yet, she writes letters to every boy she ever loved but she never sends them out since she always keeps them in her hatbox and only a few pages later the book starts to get going when the first event that kicks it all off happens when her hatbox disappears with no explanation other than it got sent alongside some other unused antiques to Goodwill. The book then talks about how Lara developed an attraction with Peter Kavinsky or Peter for short and this takes up a big chunk of the book but unexpectedly I discovered it was nothing more than a farce as I'll see later on. Not long after some dramatic event happens but when I look retroactively, it was predictable and a cheap way on behalf of the author to make a love triangle, I must say I couldn't relate or connect to any of these characters. Margot is barely there and Kitty is one of the few characters I liked, that is such a shame since if the author put more time and effort into these characters I would've given this a higher rating than three stars. The last 100 pages are about a shocking scene and an easily resolved confrontation later the book ends on a cliffhanger. Wow. (
