"The #1 New York Times bestselling author returns to the world of Mistborn with his first novel in the series since The Alloy of Law. With The Alloy of Law, Brandon Sanderson surprised readers with a New York Times bestselling spinoff of his Mistborn books, set after the action of the trilogy, in a period corresponding to late 19th-century America. The trilogy's heroes are now figures of myth and legend, even objects of religious veneration. They are succeeded by wonderful new characters, chief among them Waxillium Ladrian, known as Wax, hereditary Lord of House Ladrian but also, until recently, a lawman in the ungoverned frontier region known as the Roughs. There he worked with his eccentric but effective buddy, Wayne. They are "twinborn," meaning they are able to use both Allomantic and Feruchemical magic. Shadows of Self shows Mistborn's society evolving as technology and magic mix, the economy grows, democracy contends with corruption, and religion becomes a growing cultural force, with four faiths competing for converts. This bustling, optimistic, but still shaky society now faces its first instance of terrorism, crimes intended to stir up labor strife and religious conflict. Wax and Wayne, assisted by the lovely, brilliant Marasi, must unravel the conspiracy before civil strife stops Scadrial's progress in its tracks. Shadows of Self will give fans of The Alloy of Law everything they've been hoping for and, this being a Brandon Sanderson book, more, much more"--… (més)

Sanderson's best prose by far ( )

I didn't like this quite as much as the first Wax and Wayne Mistborn book, but I still enjoyed it. ( )

A mad shapeshifter plots to drive a city into chaos.

3/4 (Good).

There's not enough action, not enough for Wayne to do, too much politics, Theological Soul-Searching, and some long, slow stretches. I'm very much enjoying reading the series, but this is definitely a step down from the action-packed romp of "Alloy of Law."

Here's Betule's possibly inaccurate and probably not entertaining Shadows of Self Cheat Sheet, for the busy man, woman, or... question mark who has more important things to do than reread these things when the next one comes out.

Actually, no. Don't read this. It's just for me.

Wax is in love with his late partner, named, uhhh, something like Laurel, whom he had accidentally shot (in the book before? I don't know; I didn't do one of these for that one.)* and definitely not in love with his fiancée, Steris. It seems like he barely even likes her. But it's okay, they're doing it for mutual political benefit or whatever. And Steris's cousin (or sister) Marasi seems to have a thing for Wax. ... I haven't seen any soap operas in my lifetime but I have seen Jane the Virgin and I did just write this paragraph.

Wax has an uncle (Big Tim? No.) who is in cahoots with the corrupt presidentish guy's brother. Was there a story with Big Tim?

The kandra are all immortal now, and the older ones were there during the first Mistborn trilogy. One of them, who was the Lord Ruler's favorite, resents Sazed's influence on her and removes one of her two spikes so that he can no longer find or contact her.

But a kandra with only one spike is (arguably) insane. This one finds out how to combine Allomancy with Hemalurgy and... ka-fucking-pow. Everyone's afraid for the presidentish guy. The rogue kandra wants to pull another Kelsier and have the downtrodden revolt, while the rest of the kandra try to keep them calm.

The Presidentish they were trying to protect was, of course, already dead and being impersonated the whole time. That wasn't a killer Brandon Sanderson right hook. And then Lessie was also the kandra from the start! That wasn't a great Brandon Sanderson follow up left hook. Did he get lazy on this one or am I reading better?

Yeah, something was going on with Big Tim. He knows about Ironeyes, maybe. We'll find out next time. Okay, maybe I'm not reading better.

* Yes, I am aware that I'm currently using the internet.

PS i do not think these semi-close names are funny i just read this two weeks ago and it's fuzzy

I enjoyed this one too, although a little less than the previous one. i'm looking forward to the next one. I became impatient Wax's preoccupation with Lessie, but understand the reason for it. ( )
