Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow and Reds like him, are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.… (més)

Not sure why this was still on my to-read shelf. ( )

It took me a long time to finish this book, but it was really good. Interesting premises, but most importantly it delivered. I never read something like it, and that's the greatest compliment you can give to scifi book. ( )

Scifi BookClub Sept 2016 / Audiobook:

I have so many strong, problem opinions about and reactions to this book. I the wave of loving a series like The Expanse, and picking this book for the Scifi BookClub because the second in the series was voted Goodread's Best Scifi for 2015, I expected a lot of this book......and I got absolutely nothing back.

The main character is superhuman and arrogant a lot of the time. A wife is friged, as an in-chatacter choice, just for the pushing of the male main character into being a revolutionary. I wish I felt Darrow mattered at all, but he's really not all that bright, he makes a lot of unsound decisions while calling himself politically more savy and brutal than everyone around him.

I'm still incredibly torn on whether to read book two or not. The last third of the of the book was better written than say the 2/3rds before it, and yet the very ending was just so thickly laid on I was rolling my eyes and snapping at the car speakers. ( )

I entered this read as a bit of a spur of the moment buddy read. It literally grabbed my attention from the first two page Prologue. I really enjoyed this book from the beginning to end. There were very few parts that it lost my attention. As I don't read a lot of science fiction even though it is probably my second most read genre, it was refreshing! I enjoyed the brief buildup with our protagonist before really get rolling and then the epic scenes that unfold later on were exciting to experience. There are certainly some twists and intrigue within these pages but I don't think they were over done. I felt the pacing was very good.

One thing I heard some fellow readers complain about was they weren't real comfortable with the single POV of our protagonist being told in first person. I truly didn't mind it. I thought it kind of felt like I was sitting down with this person and they were telling me this epic adventure they experienced.

***** Spoilers *****

Some of my favorite characters and moments were the following:

I really enjoyed the beginning of Darrow's story as a Helldiver. I thought that really set the tone for the entire first book. The transformation he goes through both physically and psychologically is great along the way. The way some of his foes become his trusted allies yet you still are on edge most of the time wondering if someone will ultimately betray someone.

Pax was great as the more we learn about him, he ended up being such a deeper character.

Sevro and his Howlers are definitely up there as my favorites.

Roque was a favorite as well. Even Cassius was a favorite even though he got my nerves so many times and the ultimate outcome by the end of book one was unfortunate, but we will see where things go from here. ( )
