NCLA Review - Author Greg Garrett, Professor of English at Baylor University, and teacher of writing and theology at the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, explores ways in which comic book heroes such as Superman, Captain America, Spider-Man and others of current pop culture help us define morality and impart wisdom on how to live life. Elaborating on themes of truth and justice, evil, violence, the Beast, the Apocalypse, and the holocaust, Garrett describes comic book stories which depict current life events and situations (such as 9-11) and likens the responses of comic book heroes to Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi, Desmond Tutu, and Jesus of Nazareth. He concludes with the 3 lessons which comic books can teach us about our own lives, suggesting we take those “out into a world that desperately needs them.” Rating: 3—MN ( )

Holy Superheroes is a quick read. It presents a lot of intriguing ideas, but it tends to ramble, and it doesn't explore anything in depth. Toward the end, it gets a little preachy for my tastes. ( )
