I've been wavering over how many stars to rate this book, but I've settled on 3 as opposed to 4. I did enjoy this book - it has that vicious streak that shows that the fey aren't all good and helpful. Some of them are cruel and vindictive. At the same time, it showed the alluring beauty that draws so much curiosity and wonder for stories of "fairyland."

BUT - I have a few loves when it comes to fairy tales and folklore, so I am pretty critical of retellings of these stories: "East of the Sun, West of the Moon," "Beauty and the Beast," and "Tam Lin" are particular favorites. (The Robin Hood legend too, but there aren't exactly elements of that in this story, unless you count some archery.)

The elements that I love from those stories were there on paper, but the vital essence of it was lacking. Chemistry between Tamlin and Feyre came almost out of nowhere, but considering the glowing descriptions given to his attractive form, despite some pesky claws that can retract at will, what's not to love? And please... The love triangle needed no introduction, it was so obvious. I'm all for reworking stories to create your own, but the original stories ("Beauty & the Beast," "Tam Lin," etc.) are stronger for not having to contend with an additional possible interest for the heroine. Granted, I gather that the author is trying for a bit of the Hades/Persephone myth, so we'll see where that leads.

Am I glad I read this book? Yes. It was engaging and good escapism. Will I read the next installment? Absolutely. Will this book ever top of my list of favorite retellings or fairy stories? Not likely. Still, if you're at all curious, it is worth reading. ( )

I physically could not put this book down. I started it in one sitting and couldn't stop myself. I have been a reader my whole life but I stopped reading for fun when I started college. This book GOT ME BACK into reading again. It is everything I could ever want in a book: magic, fae, shock factor, smut, amazing plot, beautiful world, and so much more. Forever wishing I could re-read this for the first time again ( )

3.5 stars. Moving on to the next book in the series while digesting this one, reserving judgment until I know a bit more of the story. There’s some good stuff, some questionable stuff, I just don’t quite know yet... ( )

I am really glad that this book was just as good as everyone said it was. since the second book came out fairly recently, I had mostly been hearing hype about that book so I feel like the opinions I formed about this book were mostly my own. I thought the world-building in this book was very cool. I loved hearing about how different all the courts are and about the human land compared to the faerie one. There is still more I want to know about the other courts since this book mostly took place in the spring court but I am hopeful that the next book will fill out the world a little bit more. I also really enjoyed learning more about all the characters. I really liked Feyres character and personality. She seemed very real to me, though I think my favorite character is Lucien. He was just such an enjoyable character for me to read and I loved learning more about him throughout the book. His back story was definitely the most interesting to me and I ate u anything the author gave me about his character. I did like Tamlin and his romance with Feyre. I think any romance in books seems to be rushed just because of the nature of books needing to wrap up a story within a reasonable number of pages, but for this the most part, their romance seemed to develop naturally. I wish that there had been more time for us to learn about Feyre's family and more about the people in the household of the spring court, like Alis, but the next book is 200 pages longer so I am hoping that we learn some more about some of those more background characters in the next story. I also liked that this book made me so passionately hate the characters who were villains. I really like the characterization of all the villains in this story even if I hated the actual characters. I loved reading the parts of the story with Rhys and Amarantha because they just seemed so realistically wicked. I am almost afraid to read the next book now because of the agreement Feyre made with Rhys because I can see the beginnings of a weird love triangle there and although I can see the redeemable parts of Rhys's character, I wouldn't be happy if a romance happen with Feyre because of the way he treated he like a thing, even if he did help her sometimes. The next book in this series has great reviews (4.77 stars!!!), so hopefully I will like it just as much as I liked this one but we will have to wait and see. I hope I won't have to wait long because I really want to get my hands on the next book as soon as possible. I definitely liked this book and I want to continue the series very soon. Hopefully, the next book will live up to all the hope and live up to the praise of everyone!

I know some people may think it is odd that I'm updating this months after I've read it but the more I reflect on this book, the more problems I have with it. While I was reading it, I genuinely felt like it was a five-star book. This was an enjoyable read, but it had a lot of problems. I keep coming back to my problems that I now have with the relationship with Tamlin and Feyre especially the part where he sort of almost rapes her. It just felt like this was not good and not enjoyable to reflect on and the more I think about this book the more I dislike the relationship and I just can't enjoy this book as much on reflection. I will be downgrading my rating to about 3.5 starts. I still love some of the side characters and parts of the plot and I'm still excited to read A Court of Mist and Fury because that has a lot of fans but I just didn't love this book as much the more I reflected on it. Adult fantasy is always a bit...weird and not my usual thing, but I tried to put my judgments aside and allowed myself to enjoy it for what it is. And I did. Some parts made me chuckle and the absurdity, but isn't that what makes this genre fun? ( )
