Really good. This book has some wonderful images in it. I really love the character. She's stubborn, just like another Maas heroine *cough* in a way that is kind of enchanting. I really didn't want this book to end. The Audible reading was fantastic; whoever the lady was that performed it is certainly doing the right kind of work. Bravo.

Rereading this book is painful, however, knowing what you know about the end of the book and seeing what Tamlin and those of the Spring Court say to Feyre. I'm listening to it a second time and my heart hurts, knowing why the Fae do what they do. Powerfully emotional reading. ( )

Firstly, I loved Throne of Glass. I hated House of Earth & Blood. So, I went into this with an open mind.

I enjoyed the beginning of this story with Feyre hunting the wolf, but after that the story became a bit muddled. The relationship between her and her family - with Feyre providing and doing all the work and everyone being ungrateful and taking her for granted - felt very 'Cinderella'. Her punishment for the muder of a faerie was to live in luxury in the fairy kingdom and want for nothing, which made no sense at all. I began to dislike the story but I kept reading, with the feeling that more was to be revealed. Then suddenly Feyre and Tamlin had 'fallen in love' and things were explained, but I was so put off by the start of the book that these parts fell flat for me. Then the story did pick up but overall I found it problematic.

I won't talk about this being a Beauty & the Beast retelling because if I hadn't read that's what it was, I wouldn't have noticed. I did pick up references to the Ballad of Tam Lin on one page, which was nice.

The characters: Feyre (whose name sounds too much like faerie) was an interesting and independent character to begin with but I got bored of her. she didn't really do much that interested me, but rather got led around and told what to do, and did the things that people warned her against doing. Tamlin didn't do much at all, he was uninteresting and forgettable. Lucien I liked. Amarantha I also liked, she was fun and I was sad that she was killed . Rhysand was horrible. More on him later.

The challenges: to be honest I was a little disappointed with the first two. I didn't really feel any sense of danger. I knew the eye in the tattoo was going to be something that got Feyre out of danger at some point. . The third one was good, but I had guessed what was going to happen. And the riddle? I guessed that too. I don't understand why Feyre didn't.

The romance: I use this term loosely because there wasn't any romance in this book. There was lust and unhealthy relationships. Tamlin treated Feyre badly and pretty much forces himself on her. How this is potrayed as romance is a damaging portrayal of what a relationship is. Not to mention that that it is a forced 'romance' orchestrated so that a curse can be lifted. And then there is Rhysand, who drugs Feyre and gets her to perform lap dances and describes her as his property. But this is somehow OK, because he helps her in the end? Because of these aspects of the book, I cannot recommend it.

A few other things:
There is one scene where the faeries are erecting maypoles to celebrate the solstice. Maypoles = May (spring). Solstice = summer. This bothered me more than it should have.

So many things are 'golden'. Also, characters making animal sounds and doing animal things. Purring, growling, snarling, baring teeth. Made me cringe.

Two things really distracted me from the writing ... two things that happened so often I began to count the number of instances on each page -- if you know, you know -- yes -- it was at times ... painful.

I gave this book 2 stars because I liked the faerie world and I liked the premise of this book, but I felt that the delivery was executed poorly. I won't be continuing the series and this is probably the last book I will read by this author.

Such an enthralling plot with enticing characters! The ending feels complete and doesn't end with gripping suspense that forces the reader to pick up book 2 right away. Maas's characters are intriguing and the unresolved complex conflicts will lead most readers to read A Court of Mist and Fury. ( )

I found the main character really annoying but the book was OK despite her. Will I read the second book? ....Probably ( )
