More on the aesthetic: the magic system depends heavily on the user's astrological signs, with each sign being tied to a different aspect of magic. Astrology is a recurring motif, as many objects and places are named after celestial bodies. The abundance of unnatural hair colors is a bit silly, but I suppose it's in keeping with the theme (you gotta have blue hair). I also like the casual anachronisms. This is a world where people fight with swords, but communicate via holographic displays. Anytime things started to feel a little too "standard fantasy," something like that would pop up to shatter the façade.
Plot-wise, this book is very much "beginning of a series" material. Many threads are left unresolved, but the author delivers a satisfying conclusion by handily tying up the main one of this particular book. I also liked the characters; while they had diverse and relatable personalities, I felt there were too many to keep track of towards the end.
This brings me to the book's flaws. The most salient problem is style. The author uses "mm," "eh...?" and "..." with extreme and jarring frequency. That didn't diminish my enjoyment so much, but it was very ostentatious. Second, the source material ensures that the whole "power of friendship" theme is very prominent, and while I didn't find it cloying or saccharine, others may disagree. Third, the plot hinges heavily on a prophecy, which is about is hackneyed as plot devices come, but I felt it was handled okay.
So, while it's not perfect, I still enjoyed it. I would strongly recommend it, and I eagerly await the next in the series. ( )
