One night she sees Peter with her boss and it raises red flags that Peter may very well be cheating. He denies it and proposes soon after. Hallie has her doubts and she can't be happily engaged when she's unsure of Peter anymore. Her family suggests that she goes to visit her half sister Portia in Lake Como and give herself some time to think. Portia is dealing with her marriage falling apart and Hallie decides to go. When she gets there, things are much more complicated than she expected. Maybe Peter didn't cheat Maybe she doesn't want to go back Maybe she wants to stay in Lake Como When a family mystery unravels, Hallie starts questioning every decision she's made and every choice she still must make. Absolutely delightful — women’s escapism at its best. One of my favorite Anita Hughes books — and her most recent — is Lake Como, set high in the Italian Alps (near George Clooney’s house, of course). If you’re a Candace Bushnell’s Sex and the City fan, you’ve found a new author to adore. Having visited Lake Como, I was pleased to find Anita’s descriptions of the landscape, customs, and dress absolutely accurate, painting vivid memories in my mind. Her use of the five senses is so perfect that you’ll feel as if you were gazing over the turquoise water of Lake Como, the sun on your shoulders, an Italian aperitif in your hand. The story revolves around Hallie Elliot, a late twenty-something interior designer from San Francisco with a discerning eye for design and a penchant for designer labels. (I coveted the spectacular wardrobes of Hallie and her sister Portia.) The secrets the family harbors will keep you reading far into the night. An easy summer read, a fun frolic to lift the spirits. Lake Como by Anita Hughes is a summer read that will sweep readers away to Lake Como, Italy, and wish they were being romanced and fed so well! Hallie Elliot is part of a competitive interior design firm in San Francisco, Calif., and she has a journalist boyfriend, Peter, who dotes on her while wooing the famous and infamous to spill their secrets. While her life is humming along in America, her half-sister Portia’s marriage is falling apart in Italy. Hughes has crafted a novel about building and rebuilding family ties, particularly between sisters, and how unexpected events can change the course of one’s life in better ways. Hallie’s mother, Francesca, was a carefree teen studying and playing abroad when she met Pliny and quickly married him. Unwittingly, she had entered the old world of family politics, becoming a part of Italian aristocracy with their own ideas of motherhood and obligation. As a teen, Francesca could not handle the pressure, leaving her two children, Marcua and Portia, behind. Hallie has lived a privileged life in California, thanks to Francesca’s mother, Constance, a socialite and constant mothering presence. Hallie’s life is not as cohesive as many family units with a mother and father and siblings living together, but she’s able to rise above and carve out her own life. Hughes peppers the story with elements of Hallie’s growing-up years to ensure that readers understand her foibles. Hallie Elliot has a perfect life. She is an up-and-coming interior designer in one of San Francisco's most sought after firms, and has just recently become engaged to Peter, a brilliant young journalist. But when she stumbles upon Peter and her boss in what seems to be a compromising position, her trust in her perfect life is shaken. So Hallie escapes to Lake Como, Italy to spend time with her half-sister, Portia Tesoro, an Italian blueblood dealing with the scandal of a public estrangement from her cheating husband. While staying in the Tesoro villa, Hallie falls in love with the splendor and beauty of Lake Como, and finds work designing the lakeside estate of a reclusive American tech mogul. The caretaker of this beautiful estate is a handsome man named Angus, and Hallie finds herself drawn to his charm and kindness, despite hints of a dark secret in his past. But just as Hallie is beginning to find her footing on Italian soil, she uncovers a family secret that upends all the truths she's believed about herself, and calls into question the new life she's built in Lake Como. Sisterhood, family, career, and sumptuous descriptions of Italian life fill the pages of this newest offering by Anita Hughes. Lake Como is a heartbreaking and heartwarming story of love, self-discovery, and the quest for truth.
