This is a compilation of current and historical essays about why and how archivists should collect, promote, and use archives documenting the experiences of women. As is true with any collection of essays, the writing style and perspective varies greatly across these entries. In the case of earlier essays (particularly in the 70s and 80s) the focus on the experiences of white, straight, educated, urban, middle-class women and the exclusion of women of color, disabled women, LGBTQ women, rural, and working class women is pretty glaring. Luckily the editors include essays calling out the blind spots in archival collection development when it comes to non-dominant voices, and these essays are some of the most interesting and inspiring in the book. This is a very large collection (18 essays, over 450 pages, and a particularly amazing index), and I definitely started losing momentum as I moved through the book. That sense of repetition and inertia was alleviated quite a bit by Elizabeth A. Myers in her closing essay "I Am My Sister's Keeper: Women's Archives, a Reflection." Myers ties together the sometimes contradictory threads of the collection and takes a strong stand on the importance of feminist theory to archival enterprise that really rang true with this circa late 1990s women's studies major. Definitely not a general interest book, but a good one to dip in and out of if equitable archival collecting, appraisal, and description is your jam. ( ) Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
Women's archives hold a significant place in the historical record, illuminating stories of individuals who had an impact on our past in both powerful and quiet ways. The history of the archives themselves and the struggle to achieve equal representation within the historical record also tell a valuable story, one that deftly examines American culture and society over the past few centuries. In Perspectives on Women's Archives, 18 essays written by noted archivists and historians illustrate the origins of a women-centered history, the urgent need to locate records that highlight the diverse experiences of women, and the effort to document women's experiences. The essays also expose the need for renewed collaboration between archivists and historians, the challenges related to the accessibility of women's collections, and the development of community archives. Ultimately, archival relevancy is reinforced, not diminished, by sharing resources and exposing absences. This book inspires new thinking about the value of women's archives and how to fill the gaps in our recordkeeping to move toward a more diverse and inclusive future.
