Title: The Machine: A Truth Seekers Novel
Author: Bill Myers
Pages: 228
Year: 2013
Publisher: B&H
First of all, let me begin by letting readers know that this book is a juvenile fiction book. I don’t usually review these types of books, but this one sounded really interesting so I thought I would give it a try. This is a contemporary fictional story set mostly in Israel.
Jake and Jennifer are twins in the 7th grade. They currently live in California with their aunt. Their mom died 10 months ago and their dad is an archeologist/scientist. Their dad unexpectedly sends for the twins to come to Israel. He is about to have a breakthrough with some new technology that will allow people to see events from the past as they happened. Jennifer and Jake have not seen much of their dad growing up as he was always traveling a lot with his work. They are not thrilled with leaving their home, school and friends to see their absent father.
Once they arrive in Israel, the action begins. There is a lot going on and the reader won’t get bored. A lot of funny things happen and a lot of funny things are said. Jennifer has been plagued with the same nightmare several times. After the nightmare is over and she is awake, she still sees a dark shadowy figure that appears in her nightmare. Is she still dreaming? Once Jennifer meets Gita, her father’s assistant, Jennifer learns what it is she is actually experiencing. Gita is a strong Christian and teaches Jennifer that she, too, can be strong in the Lord. Jennifer has some anger issues with her father, but realizes that he does love her.
I don’t want to share too much of the plot or the ending will be ruined. There are lessons to be learned and reminders to take heed of regarding our relationship with God. Gita is a great female role model of a strong Christian woman and mentor. She is not afraid to confront evil and shows Jennifer that she can do the same. Jake provides much comedy relief, but also realizes his dad’s love for him and that his sister is changing. I think kids would enjoy this book for the comedy, action and Christian teachings.
My rating is 3 stars.
