Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Since his mother's mysterious death, he's lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, keeping one step ahead of the police and the truant officers. One day, he's tracked down by an uncle he barely knows-a man his mother claimed was dangerous. Uncle Randolph tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god. The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday. To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years. When an attack by fire giants forces him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents, Magnus makes a fatal decision. Sometimes, the only way to start a new life is to die . . .… (més)

where to start? this is a book that takes the viking myths and modernizes them, just like the author did in Pjto, Hoo and TKC.
The writing seemed more "mature" than in the other series, maybe because the character was older,
I loved the characters, apart Sam. I can't stand her AT ALL. Magnus is vry nice, even if pretty different from Percy.
But, as always, the gods weren't taken with the respect they should have been given.
I enjoyed the story anyway and I expect to enjoy the second book too.

Yay! More books by Rick Riordan! Funny characters, different gods to learn about, more impossible journeys! 4,5 stars ( )

If it's Rick Riordan, it's good. His books are formulaic, but it's a formula that works, obviously. This excursion into Norse mythology is as well researched as his Greek, Roman and Egyptian, and the group of kids serving as unlikely heroes are well characterized.

The first sentence reads: "My name is Magnus Chase. I'm sixteen years old. This is the story of how my life went downhill after I got myself killed." That hooked me, I'll admit. As is usual, gods are involved and the world will shortly be coming to an end unless the teenagers can prevent it. And, as always, the gods are a capricious lot, and not usually worthy of trust or respect. Obviously the world doesn't end, or their wouldn't be a 2nd book, but the joy of reading comes from their journey, not necessarily the unsurprising result of the journey. I think tweens especially will enjoy this group.

Riordan is criticized because (until his latest, Daughter of the Deep) his protagonists are generally boys (although they are of differing colors, races, spirituality - or lack of - etc). Well, Rick Riordan is male. He writes about boys because that is what he knows. I imagine he will take criticism for his portrayal of a girl because he isn't one - they will call it gender appropriation or something equally stupid. My point is - we can't tell authors what to write. We can refrain from buying their books or write bad reviews, but we just can't dictate what they are allowed to write, particularly when the majority of the populace trying to cancel authors is fairly illiterate! (if you don't believe me, read some of their reviews. The misspelling and grammar mistakes will make your eyes bleed). ( )

Fun listen and full of humor, something I missed in The Lightning Thief, though maybe it's the fact I don't really care for Greek mythology much, and don't enjoy it as much as that of the Norse. At any rate, I really enjoyed listening to this book.
I look forward to the next book in the series. I like Magnus Chase, Samirah Al-Abbas, Blitz and Hearth. ( )

hI know Rick Riordan has written 200+ books, but I think this is the first one I have read and this epic fantasy, with a vividly detailed world and characters come alive through his words, making this a wild action packed adventure…and you will be forced to pick a side.

A demigod teenager, a dwarf with fashion sense, a deaf elf, and a middle eastern Valkyrie walk into a bar... Okay, they didn't walk into a bar until later but they have had some ridiculous adventures while trying to stop Ragnarok from happening. The Magnus Chase series is a spinoff of Rick Riorden's Percy Jackson series. The difference is that Percy Jackson is embroiled with the Greek gods and Magnus Chase has been pulled into the world of the Norse gods.

I really didn't care for the narrator for this audiobook. I can't quite put my finger on why, but I think it's because he sounds like he's trying too hard. He voices the teenage main character and females at the same high pitch. He tries to make all the other male characters have deep voices and it comes out exactly like a woman that's joking around trying to imitate a deep male voice. I had a hard time looking past all that to enjoy the story.

As for the story, all I can say is what the crap?! It is completely absurd and insane which is off-putting but also what keeps you wanting to know what is going to happen next. The world building is the strangest I've ever encountered. Weird doesn't begin to describe it so you will just have to see what I mean for yourself.

I only gave it 3 stars because of the narrator and how it makes fun of and twists the character of the gods. I can see this being very entertaining for young adults but not so much for us stuffy grown-ups 😉 Happy reading! 📚
