When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive. Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she has become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize. This is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons. This story will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world. -- Publisher's description.… (més)

I admire Malala and her family. I think they are incredibly brave. I donated to the Malala Fund. This book is not easy to ready, mostly because it is about a part of the world I don't know much about. There are times when the pre-telling of events gets ahead of themselves and it makes it hard to follow. She will be someone to watch for a long time as she continues her life's work to make education available to all children, but especially to girls. Her father is one of a kind in the best way: supportive, encouraging, and loving. I wish them peace and the ability to return to their home when it is safe, someday. ( )

I am Malala is an autobiography told by a young girl from Swat being affected by the Taliban.
While closing girls schools, she becomes an activist for girls rights and education and because of this, she is shot. It is an inspiring story that calls everyone to fight for their rights.

"It's the right of every child to get an education and it's up to the adults to make this happen"

She is truly a wonderful role model and makes me want to stand up for what I believe in.
Her story is so real, it's not just about the activism, she talks about her family, travelling to change, even how she always fights with her siblings. However, the writing can come off as detached, particularly when she quotes some parts of her speeches.
The tone throughout the book is mostly unemotional.

I enjoyed the politics but the switching between that and Malala's life was very abrupt every time.
Since this book was co-written with someone else, that is most likely the reason.
Her story reveals truths about the Taliban and shocking things about her home.
It's still worth the read and will inspire you.

So brave that Malala would not fear to write this book!

Why did it take so long for the SWAT Elders to speak out against the Taliban?

Why did The United Nations not step in to protect the people of SWAT?

Why wouldn't Malala's father help her to find a way to help the Rubbish children?

Why did he keep his family in SWAT for so long when so many others left for protection?

And, I sure hope that white skin has become less desirable and that Malala now enjoys dogs... ( )

“If one man can destroy everything, why can’t one girl change it”

I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai with Christina Lamb

What an inspirational human being!

I’ve had this book on my TBR shelf for a while. I wasn’t crazy about the formatting and the retelling narrative style (I’m talking “just” about my reaction to tone and writing and not Malala herself), but I read it to understand the political and social context of Malala’s life, how it led to being shot by the Taliban for adhering to her convictions and speaking out about educational rights for girls, and to appreciate the work individuals, like her father, did to push forward and be beacons of hope in the midst of horrible circumstances.

What a shining star! 💫 💕

Notes (for me):

1. P. 98 - cultural view of psychiatric/mental health (stigma of being “mad”)

2. P. 227 - Insidiousness of internalized views of white skin being preferable

3. P. 165 - Mentions The Alchemist by Choelo, which I had “just” reread…love coincidences!

P. 140 - poem by Martin Niemöller “then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.” ( )

What an incredibly brave young woman.
Malala is the eldest child of a Pakistani or should I say Pashtun school teacher. She is encouraged from a young age to believe in her right to education. When the Taliban take power in her district and ban education for young woman she speaks out publicly and eventually pays a high price by being shot by the Taliban. The book provides an interesting insight into everyday life in Pakistan. ( )
