When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive. Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she has become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize. This is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons. This story will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world. -- Publisher's description.… (més)

This is an important and inspiring book about Malala's life and her fight for girl's rights to an education.

Her passion about women's right to education shine'd through the entire book, and her (and her father's) willingness to question society makes them stand out for good and bad until they eventually get targeted by Taliban.

I would have liked to get to know Malala more, because other than school and education, and her father's influence and passion for education that he passed on to his daughter, I didn't feel I got to know her.

This book spends a lot of time explaining Pakistan's history and politics, which I think is great because context is very important, but this also takes much space away from the main reason for reading this book, which for me was Malala herself.

With recent events in mind, I think it's important to read this book that shows a first hand account of how girls and societies are impacted when groups like Taliban takes control. ( )

I Am Malala - Yousafzai

This is an important memoir, if not an elegantly written document. Much of the book was a repetition of information that I had already read in news accounts since the shooting. I appreciated the historical background information. Although,I’m afraid it didn’t leave me feeling hopeful for positive change in Pakistan or Afghanistan. Beyond basic facts, I was impressed by Malala’s love for her country and her devotion to her faith. She’s outspoken in her rejection of cultural oppression, but in this publication she defines herself as a Pakistani Muslim. As far as I’ve read, she continues to do so. ( )

A fast easy read memoir by “the girl shot by the taliban.”. I encourage anyone who hasn’t read it yet to do so, it won’t take you long. But you learn from a child’s perspective what life was like before the taliban and what living with terrorism is like. You learn what getting shot at point blank range feels like because you dared to say that women should get an education. She’s a real hero and this was an inspirational read. ( )

This book excited me about Pakistan and it’s history. I had no idea of it’s lush beauty and bitter divisions. ( )
