"The Purpose Driven® Church has brought focus and direction to more pastors and church leaders than you can count. What a gift!"--John Ortberg, bestselling author Every church is driven by something. Tradition, finances, programs, personalities, events, seekers, and even buildings can each be the controlling force in a church. But Rick Warren believes that in order for a church to be healthy it must become a purpose-driven church, built around the five New Testament purposes given to the church by Jesus. "The issue is church health, not church growth!" declares Warren. "If your church is healthy, growth will occur naturally. Healthy, consistent growth is the result of balancing the five biblical purposes of the church." Rick Warren shares a proven five-part strategy that will enable your church to grow * warmer through fellowship * deeper through discipleship * stronger through worship * broader through ministry * larger through evangelism The Purpose Driven® Church shifts the focus away from church building programs to emphasizing a people-building process.

The author shares the strategies he used for building his church in the 80s and 90s, the rationale behind the strategies, and encouragement readers that they can see their church grow if they follow the Church's purpose and guidance from the Holy Spirit. He pastored a big church, and you can see from his strategies that he is goal-oriented and thinks big. He reminds me of a charismatic business manager. He organizes church trainings/meetings/ministry very effectively; everything was very structured. I wonder whether or not these structure may be too rigid....The fact that his church flourished under the structure shows he is skilled at organizing, though. My favorite part of the book is how he suggests Christians reflect on five aspects: 1)our spiritual gifts, 2) passion, 3) natural talent, 4) personality, and 5) experience when searching for a ministry that suits us the best. To complement this emphasis on personal discovery, he also talks about trusting never push people into a ministry. "Instead, pray and wait for God to bring you the person best shaped to lead a particular ministry. Then, let them start it." I think this is an innovative idea, even in 2018. ( )

In twenty years of local church ministry this has been the most transformative book I have ever read and implemented. What is offered is not so much an off-the-shelf product, but a thinking process. When local churches engage with this process, it transforms every aspect of them. The book is not primarily about church growth, but church effectiveness, which leads to growth. I also write as someone who disagrees with some of Rick Warren's own doctrinal stance - but that is not the point! The point is local churches think about serving the present age. Otherwise they have no point. ( )

I thoroughly reviewed this book for my dissertation. Warren's basic philosophy is that the purpose of the church is so that unbelievers come there to be evangelized. Any thing that would keep them from coming should be eliminated. Warren misuses several passages of Scripture to support his thesis.

The Biblical reality is that the practical purpose of meeting at church is to equip believers to go out and do the work of evangelism.

The Bible does not invite people to church, but to Christ. Once they come to Christ, they become a part of the church. ( )

I dedicate this book to the bivocational pastors around the world: shepherds who faithfully and lovingly serve in churches that aren't large enough to provide a full-time salary. You are the true heroes of the faith in my view. May this book encourage you.

I also dedicate this book to seminary and Christian college professors: educators called to prepare the next generation of pastors. Wbat an awesome, holy task you have! May God bless and honor your ministry. Finally, I dedicate this book to the pastors and staff who have served with me at Saddleback Church. It has been a great adventure together. I love you deeply.

Southern California is well known for its beaches. It's the part of the country that popularized the music of the Beach Boys, beach party movies, and of course, surfing. ... If you take a class on surfing, you'll be taught everything you need to know about surfing. ... But you'll never find a course that teaches "How to Build a Wave." Surfing is the art of riding waves that God builds. ... Our job as church leaders, like experienced surfers, is to recognize a wave of God's Spirit and ride it. it is not our responsibility to make waves but to recognize how God is working in the world and join him in the endeavor.
