Izzy is excited to be old enough to help set the table, but after a while the task grows boring and she starts to change things up. The Table Sets Itself by Ben Clanton uses some familiar parts from the rhyme "Hey, Diddle Diddle." A little girl is happy to be told to set the table, but after a while it gets boring. The plate does not want to be next to the fork, things like that. At the end of the story, all of the utensils seem to come to an understanding.
Children can learn the proper way a table is set. That could lead into a lesson about etiquette. ( )
