This review is also featured on Behind the Pages: Sinner

Out of Boundary Woods and into LA, Sinner takes readers on a wild ride with Cole as he tries to win back Isabel. Cole struggles to become a better person. Instead of escaping into drugs or alcohol, he is one syringe away from becoming a werewolf. On the other hand, Isabel fights against the emptiness that is beginning to consume her. And as alluring as Cole is, she dreads being attached to someone who may simply cast her to the side.

Filled with complex emotions, Sinner is a battle between ice and fire. Isabel and Cole are at constant odds, and when they are on the pages together be prepared for sparks to fly. The tension between them is intense as they trade sarcasm and witty comebacks. But as much as their back and forth was entertaining at first, the repetitive nature became somewhat draining to the storyline.

Years ago when I first read Sinner, the amount of drama between Cole and Isabel entertained me. And while it engaged me as a reader in my twenties, now that I am revisiting the characters in my thirties, I wondered why they continued to try. I also recognize that I am no longer part of the target audience for Sinner and am now looking at this from the approach of how this book fosters unhealthy relationships.

The fantasy elements that originally drew me to The Wolves of Mercy Falls are also almost nonexistent. I did think it was a creative twist to have Cole addicted to becoming a werewolf, instead of using drugs, but this made the fantasy more of a plot device than actual context. Sinner focuses heavily on relationships, drama, and addiction. Would I recommend this for young adults? Yes, I think it does hit the right marks for older young adults due to its content. But I think this one will be just for young adults. ( )

A great wrap-up/companion. We really didn't need more from Sam or Grace, but Isabel and Cole needed to complete their story.

I love that MS can write such diverse characters that are realistic and believable, and still be recognizable as individuals. Her characters have issues to deal with, but they do it in real ways. That is more apparent in the Raven Cycle than in Sinner, but it's still a part of this story. This is more difficult than it sounds as most authors who try to add "quirks" to their characters just end up with wacky strange ones, not meaningful people who are trying to grow and change.

One fun thing about reading this now is that after I met MS this summer I can hear her voice in her characters. It adds just a little more life to them for me. I may need to go back and re-read the others soon to get the same experience.

The only big hang-up I had with this story was with Isabel. If she hates people and touching people so much, what is her real motivation to becoming a doctor? And why does she have to work so hard to keep up her harsh image? If it was really her, it wouldn't be work to be herself. I know she was working on changing herself, but it just wasn't quite enough for me.

Overall, a great read for her fans. And most anyone else who likes a little paranormal in their everyday world. ( )

I don't read romance any more because time and time again it disappoints me, falling into tropes that are fun when Jane Austen uses them, but hackneyed in the 21st century. I am telling you that so you will understand why I was so surprised to reach the end, close the book, and think that was one awesome romance book. It manages to use every romance trope to its advantage and still come off as character driven literature.

Stiefvater's characters are so brilliant and fully fleshed that I forget that she's winding her way toward a fairy tale-ish happy ending of love. Of course, Stiefvater likes her fairy tales the way I like mine: full of foggy futures and horses charging out of the surf looking for blood. Her writing carries me along for the ride and I find myself caught up and unable to look away. I admittedly started this book months ago and I just wasn't ready for it. Then I picked it up 4 days ago to see if it would make my list of books for my vacation reading. Huge mistake. It would have been a great beach book. Unfortunately I stayed up late two nights in a row to finish it and now I won't get to enjoy it on the beach. I was literally disappointed when I realized this shortly after midnight as I read the last paragraph and finally gave into sleep.

In all honesty I like this book better than the first three Wolves of Mercy Falls books. Cole and Isabel are angrier and sharper. They're not just ignored and sad in the wilderness, falling in love like two tragic little beat poets. They are actively the wolves out hunting, looking to hurt and slay and bracing themselves to be hurt and slain. And here I am rooting these two broken, tragic creatures on.

Starting up the "Best of 2015" list just for this book. ( )
