Sometimes a book just leaves you feeling. I can't say with 100 percent certainty what I expected going into this book (things I knew about it: 1] It was likely literary fiction, and 2] it had something to do with books), but I know that got much more out of it. It's a simple story, in a way, though the plot gets a little convoluted at times. But this one's not so much about the plot, it's about the people, and the way that — like books — we connect with the right ones at the right time. You'll probably get more out of it if you're a reader, but as long you're a human, it's worth a read. ( )

I stumbled upon this book by chance after searching for books about books. I had never heard of it, never read anything by the author so was quite blind when I dove in, not knowing what to expect. I can confidently say this is now on my top ten favorite lists. If you're a reader of even the casual sort you'll find yourself in these pages, in these characters. The last bit of the book threw me, was not emotionally prepared for the turn the story took.

I really fancied Gabrielle Zevin's narrative style and every single character had depth and demanded reactions from the reader which is what I always look for.

I closed the library edition for the last time and went online straight away and bought my own copy so I can read it again and again. I will note, I this is not the type of book I normally read yet I loved it more than I could have imagined.

If this has been on your list for a while (as it was for me) don't hesitate, pick it up and dive in you wont regret it! ( )

Every now and then I come across a book that is so beautifully executed that it makes me want to tell everyone I meet about it. I think I experienced it last with Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore. That book was so magical and smart and practically perfect. I feel the same way about The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry. Fikry is cranky, bitter and downright mean when we first meet him. He's experienced a couple of major losses in his life that have changed him into this unlikable "old" man. And then he receives a package at his store that changes his life forever. I don't do spoilers but believe me when I say I was not expecting the direction this book took and I loved every minute of it. Plus, Fikry owns a bookstore on a tiny island off the coast of Massachusetts so part of the fun is his opinion on books. Here's a quote: “I do not like postmodernism, postapocalyptic settings, postmortem narrators, or magic realism. I rarely respond to supposedly clever formal devices, multiple fonts, pictures where they shouldn't be—basically, gimmicks of any kind. I find literary fiction about the Holocaust or any other major world tragedy to be distasteful—nonfiction only, please. I do not like genre mash-ups à la the literary detective novel or the literary fantasy. Literary should be literary, and genre should be genre, and crossbreeding rarely results in anything satisfying. I do not like children's books, especially ones with orphans, and I prefer not to clutter my shelves with young adult. I do not like anything over four hundred pages or under one hundred fifty pages. I am repulsed by ghostwritten novels by reality television stars, celebrity picture books, sports memoirs, movie tie-in editions, novelty items, and—I imagine this goes without saying—vampires.”

And this quote is a tiny spoiler but I've edited it so it's not totally spoiled. This quote is pretty much the most romantic proposal in the world. I'm strange, I know this.“All I can say is ... All I can say is we'll figure it out, I swear. When I read a book, I want you to be reading it at the same time. I want to know what [you] would think of it. I want you to be mine. I can promise you books and conversation and all my heart, [potential spouse].” I mean come on! So, if you're looking for a book that gives you the feels, the laughs and is utterly charming and leaves a lasting impression, this is the book for you. I'm just sorry I waited this long to read it.

I'm so glad I came across this book. After couple fantasy books, packed with lots of action and deep plots, this was a great return to amazing stories about the amazing lives of amazing (although fictional) people. Written by Gabrielle Zevin, The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry is an exceptional story, that follows the lives of several different characters, brought together both by intention and fate. Needless to say, it's very well written with great attention to detail – I have to admire the literary mentions that are very discreetly and unobtrusively slipped into the main story – they greatly complement the book-loving spirit of A. J. Fikry. Another thing, that I appreciated greatly is, that the characters are very believable. They have passions, flaws, and quirks and they develop through the story. The lovely smart two-year-old becomes a six-year-old who loves her daddy to pieces and then a teenager, who is little bit embarrassed by his father, the lonely depressed man, who despites many things, eats only frozen food and drinks too much becomes a loving dad, who tries very hard to make his little girl happy and to find happiness and love of his own. Even the mysterious abandonment of a small child, that felt at the beginning a tat bit unrealistic, makes perfect sense at the end, as the plot develops.

This is a heart warming, funny, sad a touching tale of life... And although the book is slow-paced, or more precisely, very calm, it does not drag or get boring at all – it just fluently flowing through series of life events and their consequences. The one negative thing, that I have to point out is, that there is one point in the book, where the author has to reach very suddenly to the point of view of a supporting character, to explain some things, but it brings a conclusion to some questions, so it's not disturbing, just unexpected. And also, what kid is not present when her father has an operation to wish him luck. Other than that, there aren't any flaws to the book, at leat for me. ( )
