This title tells the dramatic story of how the Royal Navy transformed ordinary citizens into first-rate and fearless sailors and navy personnel during World War II. It covers how they were recruited and trained, and how they endured life at sea in hostile waters, protecting convoys in the Atlantic, hunting submarines in the Mediterranean, and standing up to relentless air attacks in the Pacific. Told from the perspective of vivid first-hand accounts of life onboard, it reveals what it was like to be a sailor navigating, patrolling, and fighting in the largest theater of the war- the vast oceans.… (més)

This is an excellent little book and the words and photographs combine to give a good picture of the rough life at sea, particularly in smaller ships, in the wartime Royal Navy. Some of the line drawings by Roger Furse are not that good, frankly, but they don't detract from the book overall. One mistake I noticed was the caption for the photograph on page 53 - CEO should read CO and it is a pity that knighted admirals are not properly so described! A glossary of the branches of sailors might help the lay reader for I wonder how many lay readers would know what a Writer did in the war and it would be interesting to learn what action station a naval clerk had.
