Two Irish orphans find work as servants to the Windsor family, who have moved to an old creepy house in the sourwoods. Trying to make the best of the situation, Molly cleans the house and Kip minds the stables and gardens. However, there is a sickness pervading the household and a gnarly tree abutting the house. Despite Molly's cheerfulness and wisdom through storytelling, everyone in the house suffers from bad dreams caused by an evil spirit and the tree's magic secret, which make leaving near to impossible. The Irish dialogue was weak at points, but I enjoyed the book's tension and especially Auxier's afterword explaining his inspirations for the story. ( )

Children's middlegrade fiction (scary adventure). Reviewed from uncorrected ARC. I'd love to see kids reading this instead of goosebumps, but probably few would pick it up because of its length (perhaps if you give them a taste with a little reading aloud). There are definitely scary bits, and violent deaths that happen out of sight, so I think the middlegrade distinction is appropriate. ( )

This book was creepy from the beginning. Molly and Kip take jobs at an old house almost engulfed by a huge tree. They quickly realize something is very wrong and are pulled into the evil that is stalking the house. Molly was a feisty young woman. She was a story teller as well although the author explores the line between stories and lies as well as intentions.

I read this aloud to my sensitive 11 year old. It would have been much too scary for her to read by herself, but together we persevered and enjoyed the experience. Mr Auxier says one of the books that inspired this one was Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes and it certainly captures that sinister and super-natural atmosphere.

There is some horrific violence in this novel, but it is subtle and very well handled. I do think it didn't disturb my daughter as much as it could have, because it was handled so subtly. The main characters are spunky and smart. The adults are struggling, but not entirely useless, at least in the end.

All in all, this book was a wonderful introduction to the horror genre for my daughter, and an indication that she will not be reading any others any time soon! ( )

This book is by far the best book I've ever read. You wont forget it soon after you read it. ( )

Quote from Hester on page 207 about stories:
"There's tales, which are light and fluffy.  Good for a smile on a sad day.
Then you got yarns, which are showy - yarns reveal more about the teller than the story.
After that there's myths, which are stories made up by whole groups of people.
And last of all, there's legends. . . Legends are different from the rest on account of no one knows where they start.  Folks don't tell legends; they repeat them.  Over and again through history."
