There are several very good elements to this story, but my favorites are Whyborne's dreams/contact, his intense dislike of these new electric lights, and the danger of power.

My least favorite is the apparent erasure of the effects of that power, but perhaps it's a problem going forward, so I reserve judgement. (I've perhaps read 'too much' Lovecraftian mythos.)

This one is less fraught with relationship despair, too, something I disliked in the first two books. (I'm told that gets much better as we go on.) Next up, Necropolis! Not a foreboding title at all... ( )

This series just keeps getting better. I am IN LOVE with this concept of different (mis)adventures, bound by the common thread of Whyborne & Griffin (who make me go awww time and again) and Christine (who obligatorily kicks ass here, as per usual). It’s like the awesomest of TV shows, but better - because it's books.

In this one, there’s another perfectly-constructed mystery, including but not limited to: a mindfucked killer; cryptic dream-messages from the deep; an ancient sea creature/god (which I imagined to be a giant kraken); and a really creepy mental asylum, complete with a mad doctor with delusions of grandeur and handsy orderlies I would be more than happy to castrate myself.

Griffin was really vulnerable here - as soon as an asylum was mentioned, I knew there will be trouble - which I simultaneously loved and hated. Loved because I got to see another side of him, and hated because who’d want one of their favorite characters to go through a hell like that? Also, Griffin’s parents made an appearance. Watching him go to all that trouble to hide his relationship with Whyborne and hope for the best was painful, because it was obvious how much he wanted - needed - their approval. When the jig was up, the conclusion was predictable - everyone got hurt, including Whyborne.

Whyborne, who showed his darker side here! Woo-hoo! LOVED. THAT! Granted, he was possessed when most of the awesome shit was happening, but his thoughts took a very interesting turn. The epic showdown at the end was EPIC. ( )

I started this book last year but decided to pause this series and just read it this year. I always think that the books of this series have a really slow pacing, and this is tiresome sometimes. Griffin's and Whyborne's relationship is sometimes too shallow, even after all they been through, but you can see they're slowing progressing. ( )

For some reason I didn't connect as much with this one as the previous two. Whyborne was a bit slow on the uptake, which was tedious, but it wasn't entirely that. I still like the characters, and overall enjoyed it, but I just wasn't as taken with it as I have been previously. ( )

Another awesome addition to this paranormal series.

The writing is pectacular, that it makes these books readable and enjoyable.

The mystery part keeps getting creepy and i am here for all that. I will continue sounding like a broken record by repeatedly saying, this is the best paranormal series i have ever read.

The relationship between Whyborne and Griffin continues to make me all gooey. These two are perfect for eachother and dorky Whyborne is one of the best characters ever.

Griffin's back story is heartbreaking. The fact that we don't get his POV but still get to know him well through Whyborne is amazing and just proves JLH knows her shit.

Thank you, Cristina, Ele, Gabi, Linda, Moony, Rosa, Teal and Xia for another awesome giant buddy read. ( )
