A very engrossing read focusing on two female police officers trying to make their way in the male dominated field in 1974 Atlanta, GA, while hunting down a cop killer. The story was graphic in detail, dark, discriminatory, grim and brutal. I found myself completely immersed in the story and it was hard to put down. ( ![]() Atlanta, 1974. As a brutal killing and a furious manhunt rock the city, Kate Murphy wonders if her first day on the police force will also be her last. For life is anything but easy in the male-dominated world of the Atlanta Police Department, where even the other female cops have little mercy for the new girl. Kate isn't the only woman on the force who is finding things tough. Maggie Lawson followed her uncle and brother into the ranks to prove her worth in their cynical eyes. When Maggie and Kate become partners, and are sidelined in the search for the city's cop killer, their fury, pain, and pride finally reach boiling point. With the killer poised to strike again, will Kate and Maggie have the courage to pursue their own line of investigation? And are they prepared to risk everything as they venture into the city's darkest heart? Atlanta in the 1970s -- segregated police force, poverty, and gay policemen on the DL. Who knew someone could make those 3 things SO FASCINATING. I saw Karin Slaughter speak at a library event a couple years ago. It's clear now this was the book she was working on at the time. Many of the stories she told were retold in this book. I loved it. Karin is a great story teller. Whether she's spinning a yarn at a reader event, or in one of her series books and now in her very first stand alone she will suck you into her well crafted story until you lose all track of time and reality. She's THAT good. Atlanta police dept. during the mid 70's very white and male controlled. In this time a new black mayor meant much turnover in the dept. Women were terribly mistreated which provides the basis for this novel. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

"Atlanta, 1974. It's Kate Murphy's first day on the job and the Atlanta Police Department is seething after the murder of an officer. Before the day has barely begun, she already suspects she's not cut out for the job as a cop. Her male uniform is too big, she can't handle a gun, and she's rapidly learning that the APD is hardly a place that welcomes women. Worse still, in the ensuing manhunt, she'll be partnered with Maggie Lawson, a cop with her own ax to grind (and a brother and uncle already on the force)--a strategy meant to isolate Kate and Maggie from the action. But the move will backfire, putting them right at the heart of it"-- No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
