This girl's life was easy compared to other girl's growing with their parents telling them lies. ( ) i really want more stories like this to be told. but better, so much better. the writing isn't good, although it also isn't terrible. but more importantly the development of the characters and the story are both poor. throughout the entire book there is hardly anything the characters say or do that is even slightly believable. the whole thing feels false and contrived. disappointing. it won awards, i'm sure, because it is about something we need to have more books about (intersexuality), but certainly not because it did it well. The main character, Sophie, is born with both male and female genitalia, at medical advise, her parents chose to have surgery on their infant and to raise her as a girl. This doesn't work out all that well, Sophie ends up feeling like both male and female; and she regrets having had this decision taken from her. This is pretty much of an issue book, and the writing and characters are pretty flat. But it did make me think about what it would mean to be intersex. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

Never have there been only two genders--male and female. A third gender, denied by society and hidden by the medical community, has always existed, and that is what Sophie Schmidt discovers when, at the age of fourteen, she learns the truth of how she was born. Sophie then embarks on a journey to learn more about her true self and to find others born like her. When Sophie moves to New York City, she enters the world of gays and lesbians, as well as those who are transgender and transsexual. Searching for her own place in society, her journey leads her to Alice Parker, and Sophie takes the final steps to accept herself enough to allow another to love her.
