Narcissistic bloviating that at its best occasionally shows glimmers of humanity and at its worst is tone deaf and downright offensive. It's probably somewhat useful if you're a struggling CEO who needs to understand that even people who wind up regarded as successful CEOs struggle through it. It wasn't useful at all to me, and it was a relief to turn the last page. It felt a bit like a vanity publication. ( )

Unnecessarily self-important in tone, far too eager to assign all success directly to the author. Only read 1/2. ( )

This is one of the best business / startup book I've ever read. I have followed and his partner Marc for some time now and read their blog every few days. It's a book written by a CEO for CEOs.

Ben tells the story of his startup career and extracts powerful lessons from those. I strongly believe that every founder should read this book. It's not a self help guide or a sales manual, but rather a mentor. Ben is honest and transparent.

I do think the content is more valuable when your company guys a dozen people or so, but I recommend it to anyone interested in founding one. ( )

I have read my share of non-fiction focused on leadership and management. This was very good. I felt it provided more actionable information and guidance than the comparable efforts I have read. Ben Horowitz worked for several technology start-ups, in a leadership role and in a couple of instances as the CEO. I have never worked for a start-up or as a CEO, but I still felt the advice was relevant for me. I was surprised at the emphasis he placed on training and development of employees. In some cases I found Ben's guidance to be confirming of the paths I had taken; in other instances, I felt he provided me with real insight that helped me to see new paths forward.

Ben uses the first few chapters to provide the detail about his own leadership career, and then uses those stories periodically in the following chapters as he focuses on the challenges a CEO focuses. This approach is effective as it blends the guidance offered with the supporting stories, but it can get a bit repetitive. Otherwise, a very enjoyable and insightful read. ( )

The Hard Thing about Hard Things provides insight into the mindset required to be a founding CEO of a start up. It's a scary place to be knowing your every action will impact the future of the company and all the people who work for you! Ben Horowitz starts the book off with an abbreviated biography of his experiences as a founding CEO during the Dot Com era before jumping in to practical advice those looking to set themselves on a similar path.

I found the book to be an interesting read. While I have no desire to be an entrepreneur or CEO, I'm always curious why those at the top make some of the decisions they do, especially when they seem to make no sense at all, and this provided a small peek into that process. Even working at a large corporation that's fairly stable I can see where some of Horowitz's advice is still highly relevant, such as hiring for strength rather than lack of weakness, the importance of training your staff and how to minimize company politics.

If you aspire to be a CEO, are interested in entrepreneurship or starting your own business, currently work at a start up or enjoy peeking behind the curtain at how some businesses operate, you'll likely gain a lot from reading this book. For everyone else, your mileage will vary. ( )
