In the comics boom of the 1940s, a legend was born: the Green Turtle. He solved crimes and fought injustice just like the other comics characters. But this mysterious masked crusader was hiding something more than your run-of-the-mill secret identity: the Green Turtle was the first Asian American super hero. The comic had a short run before lapsing into obscurity, but Gene Luen Yang has revived this character in Shadow Hero, a new graphic novel that creates an origin story for the Green Turtle.… (més)

Author Gene Luen Yang and artist Sonny Liew provide the back story for a Chinese superhero, the Green Turtle, a comic book character from the 1940s. Based in the fictional city of San Incendio, Hank Chu is the modest 19-year old son of a Chinese immigrant, who is content working in his father's grocery store in Chinatown. After a chance encounter with a superhero, his embittered mother sets about turning her unwilling son into a superhero. After his father is killed by triad enforcers for forgetting to pay his protection money, Hank sets out for retribution with the help of a wayward Chinese spirit. Lots of action, excellent illustrations, with deeper moral issues too, this one was fun. My only criticism is that I would have liked to have read the character history, contained in an afterword, first.

Hank, a young Chinese-American man, just wants to work in his family's Chinatown grocery store for the rest of his life, but his mother is determined to make a superhero of him. When the local organized crime group starts threatening his family though, Hank is willing to put on the costume and become the superhero his community needs.

Recently I heard the author speaking about the background to this comic creation on a podcast and it inspired me to pick up this title. Apparently, The Green Turtle was a Golden Age superhero that never really took off, and there was some debate as to his origins story and his true identity -- did his Chinese-American creator intend for The Green Turtle to be the first Chinese-American superhero?

The original author's intentions are lost to history, but Yang here creates a compelling back story for the character and solidly places him as the child of Chinese immigrants to America. The book opens with some Chinese mythology that ultimately over time leads into Hank's superhero identity.

The family relationships are wonderfully done and Hank is a likable character that readers will be rooting for throughout. The organized crime element is also interesting, and I could see this becoming a full-fledged series, although there doesn't seem to be an indication that will be the case. However, this title does wrap up nicely enough that it doesn't feel like the reader is left hanging, so it works just fine as a standalone.

The title is set in the Golden Age of comics time period and the illustrations are done in such a way to pay homage to that while being all their own. This book ends with a note from the author about the history of The Green Turtle character and a selection from one of the original works. ( )

Yang created a backstory for an obscure Golden Age superhero named the Green Turtle, the first superhero created by an Asian-American who was ethnically ambiguous due to typical 1940s racism. Yang made him the son of Chinese immigrants in America and gave him a source of his powers that are solidly Chinese.

This was so much fun. And yeah, it was damn good to see a Chinese superhero. ( )

The central character isn't as interesting as his family or his antagonists, but Yang whips up another emotional story with dashes of Chinese mythology. Along with Liew's fun, modern style of art, he revitalizes an old Golden Age comic with greater cultural definition. ( )
