Morgan Adams, the female captain of a pirate ship, is on a treasure hunt for millions of pounds of gold reportedly buried somewhere on Cutthroat Island. She and her uncles each hold sections of the map to the treasure. While Morgan is willing to make deals and agree to share the wealth in order to put the map together, her Uncle Dawg would rather kill everyone in his way, including his niece. Nobody loves pirates and pirate movies more than I do. But this one is really rather lame. It's not hard to see why it was reportedly the biggest flop in Hollywood history, costing more than $100 million to make and earning less than one-tenth of this amount at the box office. There are two good things in this movie, impressive visuals (tropical islands, sailing ships, Port Royal, things like that) and a nice soundtrack of symphonic dimensions. No expense was spared on sets, costumes and stunts; and Renny Harlin has a good eye for an effective action scene with an epic touch. But the rest! The story is boring to death; the dialogue is painfully pedestrian; and the humour is corny beyond the pale. The characters are not even stereotypes: they are monotypes. It seems unjust to blame the cast for anything in view of all this - but still! Geena Davis is more wooden than ever; I can't recall a single line that didn't sound computer-generated. Maury Chaykin and Patrick Malahide could have been memorable, but they are not given much material to work on. Frank Langella leaves no scenery unchewed in one of the most grossly over-the-top performances in movie history; but he is fun if nothing else. It was nice to see Rex Linn, he of CSI: Miami fame, as a fierce-looking quartermaster. As for Matthew Modine, is this guy really an actor? On the whole, not the worst way to waste 120 minutes, but pretty close. Trashy pirate movies are legion, and I have seen worse. But this one is certainly among Top of the Flops. It earns two stars only because it's an eye candy. But everything else (save the music) is so poor that it doesn't qualify even for the pile of guilty pleasures. (
