"English anthropologist Andrew Banson has been alone in the field for several years, studying the Kiona river tribe in the Territory of New Guinea. Haunted by the memory of his brothers' deaths and increasingly frustrated and isolated by his research, Bankson is on the verge of suicide when a chance encounter with colleagues, the controversial Nell Stone and her wry and mercurial Australian husband, Fen, pulls him back from the brink. Nell and Fen have just fled the bloodthirsty Mumbanyo and, in spite of Nell's poor health, are hungry for a new discovery. When Bankson finds them a new tribe nearby, the artistic, female-dominated Tam, he ignites an intellectual and romantic firestorm between the three of them that burns out of anyone's control" --… (més)

I’ve always said my personal hell is to be an academic in the same niche dept as my partner in the same institution. This book magnifies that psychological horror show, with more sexual tension than the reader needs, frankly. I just really needed the characters to fuck by the halfway mark. While I didn’t necessarily get the relief I needed for all the horny build-up oozing from the pages, King did a nice job of portraying intellectual and sexual jealousy, as questionable the anthropology may have been in the 30s. A what-if exploration of Margaret Mead's life - it was interesting and fun to read, as well as frustrating that the woman who is so focused on seeing truth in community and culture can't see it in her own life, at least not with enough clarity to act. ( )

I did love this book, but I am having trouble giving it 5 stars. I finished listening to Euphoria just a few hours ago, and maybe I should wait longer to write a review as often a story will linger for a while in my mind and I find that it has affected me more deeply than I had perceived at first.

So, what I loved: the beautiful language, the almost palpable sensuality, the encounter of like minds and their intellectual connection.

What I disliked: after reading/listening to it I found the character of Nell too docile. Would a woman who had an affair with an older married woman, who wrote and published a book in the 1920’s on teenage sexuality even if from a different culture, who ventured into completely said different cultures and unknown lands really have stayed in a physically abusive relationship? People will say that women stay in abusive relationships all the time. It is true. But would Jane Goodall stay in one? Would Dian Fossey? Those are the women that the character of Nell reminds me, yet something central to the story does not seem true to her. Am I being picky? Maybe! But 4 stars it is…

PS: Maybe it is the narration of Nell’s voice by Xe Sands that feels so wrong. Simon Vance does most of the reading and I like his work here, but Xe Sands reads Nell’s diary entries and her voice is just wrong for the part. It tries to evoke sensuality but manages to be syrupy and drowsy. My opinion anyway.

She felt sleep, the old heavy kind, the kind of her childhood, come for her.
Perhaps all suicides are happy in the end. Perhaps it is at that moment that one feels the real point of it all, which, after you get yourself born, is to die.
History hung suspended for months. I took solace in the not knowing.
Sometimes at night it seemed to me that my boat was not being pushed by the engine but that boat and engine both were being pulled by the river itself, the ripples of wake just a design, like a stage set moving along with us.
I can feel the relationships, the likes & dislikes in the room in a way I never could if I could speak. You didn't realize how language actually interferes with communication until you don't have it, how it gets in the way like an overdominant sense. You have to pay much more attention to everything else when you can't understand the words. Once comprehension comes, so much else falls away. You then rely on their words, and words aren't always the most reliable thing.
