*Sighs* Where do I even begin. My journey with this book has actually spanned an embarrassing amount of months despite its rather slim page count. I purchased the book heavily discounted but was quickly taken with it’s beautifully designed cover. Add in the the blurb on the back cover I thought it was well made match. The Vanishing Season highlights the developing friendships, and something mores between three young adults, as well as the mysterious disappearance of girls across Door County in Wisconsin. And unfortunately, one of our three protagonists doesn’t escape our tale alive. The premise reeks of suspense, danger, intrigue, and tensions boiling over with the subtle of promise of romance. And the novel had the potential to deliver all of those aspects, at least if that had been the intentions of the author. The author instead flips the script, choosing to highlight the relationships and romances between our recently uprooted main character, Maggie, and the secondary characters, her new neighbors, Pauline and Liam.

It is established from the first few chapters that Maggie is a welcome outsider. She finds herself quickly becoming close friends with Pauline and a buffer for Liam and his unrequited feelings for Pauline. With that setup it’s easy to see the “love triangle” coming, as Maggie catches herself noticing Liam more than she would like to and Pauline choosing to ignore Liam’s feelings for her. But the entire scenario, and subsequent handling of a poorly defined plot dredges up my intense dislike for love triangles. It is my opinion that a love triangle, or at least a believable and interesting one, is equally distributed between the two love rivals. The character at the center of the triangle should not be leaning particularly heavy toward either character. An effective love triangle makes me believe the character at the center could end up with either love interest. The Vanishing Season’s main plot is the budding romance between the characters and it defines itself as a scalene shape (Yes, I googled that to confirm I was referring to the correct type of triangle). It leaves the plot feeling unsupported. Tie it in with a poorly resolved mystery, I found the ending to be deeply unsatisfying.

Full Review on my blog!
This was not quite what I expected. I was expecting more mystery and intrigue and less typical contemporary vibes. The only moments there is anything paranormal is during the ghost POV sections. The rest is about Maggie and her growing as a person and adjusting to a new life.

This is the first book I read by Jodi Lynn Anderson. I did liked the plot, although I didn’t connect with the main characters, so I felt that I might hadn’t enjoyed it as much as expected. I really wanted to love this book, but I honestly don’t know how I feel.

The Vanishing Season a book a thriller with a paranormal twist, about a girl who has just moved to a small town where girls are disappearing to later to be found dead floating in the lake. The book is told from two POVs,Maggie’s and a spirit that observes the trio; but it’s most in Maggie’s POV.

Maggie has moved from the bustle of Chicago to a very isolated small town called, Door Country because her mom lost her job. It’s a difficult move, but Maggie has a neighbor, Pauline, who she easily makes friends with. Pauline is a beautiful and rich girl and somewhat eccentric. Maggie also meets, Pauline’s best friend Liam. Liam also Maggie’s neighbor who is madly in love with Pauline. But Pauline doesn’t see Liam that way. Maggie finds a friendship that she didn’t expect to find and had good and funny moments with them, but they’re always aware of the disappearances.

It was well written, but not exactly my style. I just didn’t get very excited about The Vanishing Season. It felt like it took me a year to read… The murders, which were supposed to cramp their style, didn’t really seem to hold them back much. The romance was kinda predictable. I may or may not read more of this author, I’m not entirely sure yet. It was alright though.

I expected more suspense around the serial murders. The ending was disappointing. ( )

I picked up this book partly because I had just finished a different book with a similar title, and because I was intrigued by the mixed reviews I saw for it, but I ended up really liking it!

The story has elements of young adult coming of age novels, ghost stories, mystery, and romance, and everything came together in a way that really worked for me. The whole book has a kind of nebulous feel and had some beautiful writing that I really enjoyed. I think I read this book at the right time of year as well, just as winter cold was creeping up and getting ready to stay. ( )

I thought very hard about this book for a few days and I've come to the conclusion that I really just did not like it.

The writing was beautiful which is the only reason it got two stars.

I felt however, that there was no plot outside of a love triangle and a mysterious serial killer who rolls into town and starts killing young girls. (I don't count this as much of a plot though because it was more like a sub plot used to push other actions and was never resolved.)

The three main characters, Maggie, Pauline, and Liam were all pretty terrible. Maggie was alright but mostly I just felt bad for her. Pauline was a horrible friend to her, and Liam was the kind of boy you wanna like and do like for a bit, but then he does something really sleazy and horrible that makes him unlikeable. There's also an overarching ghost character that is pretty much watching over everyone because he/she/it has yet to move on.

Pauline is the girl who is beautiful and rich and gets everything she wants. She's nice to Maggie who is the new girl in the small town in which the story takes place, until she betrays her and pretty much stabs her in the back. Even after that, even after Maggie gets really angry, she still goes running back to Pauline when she needs help. Which I guess shows that Maggie is the better person, but still. I just felt so bad for her. Everything she wanted was taken and give to Pauline instead who already had everything.

More ranting below the cut if you don't want spoilers. If you don't care and just wanna know why Pauline was so terrible and not waste your time reading this book, then go ahead and take a peak.

When Maggie show up in town, she meets Pauline and Liam who have been best friends since they were 5. When Maggie asks Liam how long he and Pauline have been together, he says they've been together since they were 5, obviously mistaking the question for "how long have you known each other" because when Maggie asks Pauline the same question, she says they aren't dating, and it would be weird to date Liam because he's a best friend who's like a brother/family.

Ok fine. Liam doesn't seem to get that and basically tells Maggie that he's a one girl kind of guy, he's in love with Pauline, and that'll pretty much never change. He's even building her a sauna in the woods.

So then there's the whole thing with this killer on the loose. Pauline's helicopter mom gets freaked out and sends her to live with another rich family member in Milwaukee and says she can't come home until the killer is caught. So Pauline leaves and Maggie and Liam start hanging out more.

Of course they develop feelings for each other and start dating and fall in love and say they love each other. This part of the book was very sweet and was probably the only part I kinda liked. Liam was always a bit suspicious to me as the potential serial killer because everyone kept telling Pauline she should stay away and didn't need him as a friend, and then they'd say the same to Maggie once she moved to town. He also has a creepy dad. So I wasn't very trusting of him. When he was with Maggie though, he was very sweet and caring and he pretty much forgot all about Pauline and how she didn't return his feelings. Good. Move on bro, she clearly wasn't interested. He even tells Maggie that their time together was everything he'd been waiting for and the best month of his life.

Then someone is arrested as the killer and Pauline comes home.

This is when everything goes back to being really crappy.

So Pauline comes home with a boyfriend which is great. And Liam is fine with it because he's with Maggie. Who he says he loves. Pauline sees Maggie and Liam kiss and then pretty much gets jealous and decides maybe she does want Liam because he's with someone else now and NOT totally consumed with her. She also asks Maggie if she loves Liam and she says yes. This just makes what she does so much worse.

Liam works for a catering company in town and ends up having to work at a town dance/function that Maggie, Pauline, and Pauline's boyfriend James attend. James is a weirdo and extremely possessive. Pauline sneaks off to find Liam, and once she does, she basically tells him she wants to be with him and then she kisses him. First he pushes her away, and I start thinking, good job Liam. Tell her you're happy with Maggie and don't need to be wrapped up in her mind games. Does he do that? NO! He then pulls Pauline in and KISSES HER BACK. AND POOR MAGGIE SEES THE.WHOLE.THING.

Then after Maggie's done being mad THEY ALL START HANGING OUT TOGETHER AGAIN LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED. WHAT.EVEN.

I was pretty much fuming at this point. I'm totally fine with love triangles but ones that involve cheating and betrayal especially among friends, and ESPECIALLY when you claim to love the one you cheated on just don't appeal to me.

Pauline's possessive boyfriend James is clearly not ok with this new situation so he claims he's going to beat Liam up. And he does. Almost to the point of killing him. Pauline goes rushing to Maggie to help her get Liam to the hospital when she can't get her car to start and they decide the best course of action is to bring a doctor/ambulance back to their houses to get him. (I forgot to mention they're neighbors) And the best way to get to town is by crossing over the frozen iced/snowed over lake. Because it's the dead of winter. And it's freezing. Guess what stupid Pauline is wearing? Only a dress. No coat. Not even tights or leggings under the dress.

They start crossing the lake and realize that they can't make it all the way across because they're tired and cold so they stop for a rest. Pauline is extra cold so guess what Maggie does? GIVES PAULINE HER FUCKING COAT BECAUSE SHE'S THE ONLY ONE WHO'S A DECENT PERSON. Guess what she gets in return? SHE DIES.

Yep. She dies. And then we find out the ghost character that's had sporadic POV chapters throughout the book was actually ghost!Maggie. WHAT EVEN IS THIS BOOK.

I just couldn't deal with it. Not only does Pauline get everything and Maggie get nothing out of their friendship, MAGGIE ALSO DIES. Talk about getting the crap end of the deal.

*LE SIGH*

This book was kind of haunting and had an overall sense of mystery which reminded me of We Were Liars by E. Lockhart EXCEPT THAT BOOK WAS BEAUTIFUL AND THIS BOOK WAS SO FRUSTRATING AND PLOTLESS.

Pick it up if you're curious. The writing itself is the only positive. The storyline is pretty weak. ( )
