I liked this one better than I did her last few books. Katy wasn't in it which helped. And Ryan featured a fair bit with a huge surprise right at the end. That alone made the whole book worthwhile! Tempe has also calmed down a bit and did not keep deliberately putting herself into danger or at least not without taking some precautions first. So it was all quite readable and in fact enjoyable. If you have enjoyed the series so far then don't give up before you have read this one. I always enjoy the Tempe Brennan books, but this one just didn't click for me. Too much of a one-person show (Tempe). Everybody else, maybe except Slidell, are not really well drawn: Andrew Ryan = he's there but not really there, as he's dealing with his own personal loss victims = there are about 4 or 5 or 6 girls missing or murdered, yet they are all quite interchangeable. I got lost in which one got missing or murdered where and when Anique Pomerleau = she never really makes an appearance, because she is dead by the time she does Tempe's mum = she's in an old-people's home and not all there, yet she is such an IT wizard that she finds two very important clues...Hmmm.... Umpie Rodas = He sounded like an interesting character, but is only present in a few chapters Ajax guy = some guy with ultra OCD. Slidell vs Tinker = their constant bickering created some interesting dialogue, but to the extent that the dialogue takes centre stage rather than the person. Again, I don't think the Tinker guy was well developed as a character. Henriette Hull = she plays an interesting role towards the end, but I can't remember who she was. Was she the crime reporter at the newspaper? And as others have pointed out: I finished the book, I know who has done it, but I still struggle to verbalise why that person did kill the victims. Still an OK read, and Kathy Reichs is a good writer. But I prefer her earlier books where the focus is more on the procedure rather than the main character.
As an author she has her tremendous asset of technical and bureaucratic knowledge - this needless to say, carries her a very long way. Missing, however, is the sense of atmosphere... Pertany a aquestes sèriesTemperance Brennan (17) Contingut aContéDistincions
