Honestly had trouble putting this one down. Great story and visually really striking and immersive. It's pretty ballsy of the publisher to compare it to the Sandman and Preacher series, as it has the soul and wit of neither, but it brings its own guns to the party. ( )

Pretty Deadly is a beautifully written and illustrated western that takes the form of a folk tale. Emma Rios and Jordie Bellaire join forces to create beautifully expressive illustrations. My only complaint is that the nonlinear storytelling makes the first few chapters confusing and it is easy to miss a few major plot points until all is revealed in the end. ( )

Majestic. A wonderful blend of western tropes, fairy tale like storytelling with art that draws upon European and Japanese comics. This series will cast a spell on you with its grit, darkness, and artistry. ( )

Graphic novels are hard to rate because there are different aspects to them that need rating!

I don't feel, like some others, that the writing was pretentious, just that it was... convoluted. I felt lost a lot. Like I got the main idea, but there wasn't enough dialogue, or explication, or something. I dunno. I get "in media res" but I guess I still was kinda lost even halfway through. I would have loved for it to be deeper, to delve more into what was going on through conversation. Maybe later volumes will.

That being said, the concept is cool, the characters are interesting, and the art is GORGEOUS. I spent a lot of time just really looking at the art. Beautiful and dark. Just how I like it. ( )

A gorgeous but incohesive story. Some of the art itself is unfocused, there were a couple of scenes where I didn't understand who was shooting/stabbing whom and I doubt I would have understood what was going on if I hadn't read some of the reviews here. I am still bemused by some of the details.

I would like to read whatever issues are forthcoming, if only because it really is beautifully drawn, but I hope that the story is less opaque. ( )
