"In 1986, Ed Catmull co-founded Pixar, a modest start-up with an immodest goal: to make the first-ever computer animated movie. Nine years later, Pixar released Toy Story, which went on to revolutionize the industry, gross $360 million, and establish Pixar as one of the most successful, innovative, and emulated companies on earth. This book details how Catmull built an enduring creative culture -- one that doesn't just pay lip service to the importance of things like honesty, communication, and originality, but committed to them, no matter how difficult that often proved to be. As he discovered, pursuing excellence isn't a one-off assignment. It's an ongoing, day-in, day-out, full-time job. And one he was born to do"--… (més)

Fantastic insights around the great Pixar story! Relatable, thought-provoking advice that resonated well with me. Definitely recommend ( )

The full title for this one is "Creativity, Inc.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration". Hearing the title and knowing it was written by Ed Catmull, one of the cofounders of Pixar, was enough to draw me in. As someone who works in technology, but also leans towards ways of managing projects, this one hit on a long list of points that were relavant to working at Code School. Although on a completely different level, the way Pixar puts out pictures each year with multiple teams and different departments is similar to Code Schools monthly course structure. Page after page I saw problems that were familiar to me, and how they solved them at Pixar. ( )

This book gives tells a lot about the fuzzier side of creative management and how to cooperate with people in a really effective way. Catmull distills useful concepts about feedback and openness while leaving room for individual development of style and culture. Worth reading if your interested in creative leadership. ( )

This is a great book on management in general, but I more enjoyed it for the stories told of Steve Jobs. It's clear that very few men knew Jobs like Ed Catmull did. He knew the dark side that most tell, but he also saw a man who would die for the people and companies he built. The audiobook is excellently done. ( )
