"When Catherine Morland, a country clergyman's daughter, is invited to spend a season in Bath with the fashionable high society, little does she imagine the delights and perils that await her. Captivated and disconcerted by what she finds, and introduced to the joys of 'Gothic novels' by her new friend, Isabella, Catherine longs for mystery and romance. When she is invited to stay with the beguiling Henry Tilney and his family at Northanger Abbey, she expects mystery and intrigue at every turn. However, the truth turns out to be even stranger than fiction ..."--Container.… (més)

upstairsgirl: This is the book that Austen's heroine is reading (and which Austen is wryly mocking) in Northanger Abbey. Fun to read with each other; Udolpho is possibly less fun on its own.

The novel combines a satire on conventional novels of polite society with one on Gothic tales of terror. Catherine Morland, the daughter of a country parson, is the innocent abroad who gains worldly wisdom: first in the fashionable society of Bath and then at Northanger Abbey itself, where she learns not to interpret the world through her reading of Gothic thrillers. Compared to other books, this one is still great. Compared to other Austen books, I feel a bit disappointed. ( )

The thing people don’t realize about my Jane is that she’s rational; indeed, she has that classic excess of rationality: never married. I hate to dump on the French, but she’s not like Colette, (although Simone’s not Colette), not just a pretty ribbon in a wild breeze, that couldn’t care less about the fact that her country was turning into hell, or about much of anything else, either. “We are English, we are Christians”, and not French atheists, right. There is much about rational love, but little of scorning logic. Much about reasons for reading, and the humorous ideas that can be drawn from books, but the point is not to be an unthinking leaf that can make no movement but to fall from the tree and die. My Jane is not Mrs Bennet.

…. Because the thing is, without reason there can be no true love, just a beast of the field prowling for meat.

…. Some people, though, are too much: Claudine a l’ecole by Lydia Bennet.

…. It’s surprisingly modern in places, like Catherine assuming she had done something wrong, whereas the General really just disliked her because she had less money than he thought. This still happens today. People take personally slights given to everyone with no money, regardless of their character.

…. “And it is great comfort that she is not a poor helpless creature, but can shift very well for herself.”

…. We are English, we are Christians, and we love money….

I realize I've read this twice before, but I enjoyed it more this time than in the past. This is lighter and more amusing than some of Austen's books. Catherine's over-active imagination, fueled by the novels she reads, leads to some interesting situations and misunderstandings. As always, I enjoy reading about this time in English history. ( )

No one who ever had seen Catherine Morland in her infancy, would have supposed her born to be an heroine.

"Oh! It is only a novel!" replies the young lady, while she lays down her book with affected indifference, or momentary shame. "It is only Cecilia, or Camilla, or Belinda"; or, in short, only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour, are conveyed to the world in the best-chosen language.
Friendship is certainly the finest balm for the pangs of disappointed love.
...but while I have Udolpho to read, I feel as if nobody could make me miserable.
Young people do not like to be always thwarted.
Give me but a little cheerful company, let me only have the company of the people I love, let me be where I like and with whom I like, and the devil may take the rest
