(The Dark Age is a short story.) On the day she was born, he left for the stars. He watches her grow up on screens. Misses her first words. Misses her first steps. She's never kissed his scratchy cheek, or fallen asleep on his shoulder. He's never wiped away her tears, or sung her to sleep. Now she's a toddler, and he's about to enter hibernation sleep -- and when he wakes nearly 150 years in the future, his family will be gone. This is a short story for every father who never wants his daughter to grow up.… (més)

Wow, what a great story! The author captures the emotion of the astronaut-father very well, and the reader is right there in the ship as they travel away from Earth.
I read this as my wife and I are preparing to help our son (our youngest) move out of state to start his own life with a career and, quite possibly, a wife very soon. We are feeling some of the same emotions as the astronaut, knowing that we didn't have near enough time to do and say everything we wanted, even though we've had 24 years. This story turned into something very emotional for me, not what I expected, and I was even choking up trying to explain the story to my wife. :D
Highly recommended! ( )

Across the Universe

Joe signed his life away to the space program…before his wife Frannie and their newborn daughter Elle unexpectedly lay claim to his heart. A beautiful and bittersweet story about self-sacrifice for the greater good and the human cost of scientific advancement. Pioneers, explorers, and heroes have families, too; yet rarely are their stories told.

Read with: a box of Kleenex. ( )
