A sweet informative book on a subject not easily talked about. ( )

Following the "story" or biography, There is a paragraph from and about TransKids Purple Rainbow Foundation www.transkidspurplerainbow.org Jazz Jennings was 13 years old when this book was published.

It promotes stereotypes. This book conveys a message that liking "girl things" makes Jazz a girl, where he is actually a boy.

Under the surface, Jazz is going to great lengths to alter his body because being a male doesn't align with sexist notions that only girls like pink. ( )

Yet another controversial book I was interested in reading was Jazz. It tells the true story of Jazz Jennings, a child with gender dysphoria who learns about being transgender and finally gets to embrace on the outside how she feels on the inside. Already, I watch the TLC show of the same name. Maybe had I learned of her through this book I would feel differently, but I just could not connect with her here. As I was reading it, I felt like other stories have told the important message of being yourself much better. In conclusion, if someone is trying to learn about Jazz’s story or just what it like to be transgender in general, they should definitely watch her show over reading this book. ( )

Jazz is lively child who loves pink, dancing, dressing up like the other girls. There is just one problem, she grew up a boy and her parents and family addressed as such. Jazz learns that she is transgender and her family and friends, although confused as to her identity learn about transgender children and accept her for who she is. Most importantly, Jazz learns to accept herself. A book told from a child's pint of view who is transgender and how confusing it can be to feel accepted. Even though the book is upbeat about Jazz's overcoming diversity, it makes you wonder how many more children suffer from bullying and hate. My wife and I had friends who had a son who was coping with these issues and he would wear girls clothes to school, and did things at a very young age and he suffered a lot of bullying from family and friends. When we are taught and enlightened by this issue we must teach children that we are human and being human means we must ask those questions that deserve our understanding, and we a better off for abiding by this acceptance.
