This is a very fun graphic novel, clearly inspired by Dungeons and Dragons, about a band of adventuring mercenaries. Great characters! ( )

I'm bordering on two-stars for this generic dark fantasy D&D adventure. The main thing it has going for it is that the party of angry, violent, drunken, and occasionally humorous mercenaries is entirely female. Three out of the four, though, aren't much to speak of. But I am finding myself liking Betty, the Smidgen thief. I also like Bernadette Song, a village merchant, who seems like the most sensible person in the book, but I worry that the story is going to do her dirty.

The story, by the way, is a string of fights, dumb coincidences, and random plot developments. And the writer basically steals the big Samuel Jackson scene in Deep Blue not once, but twice -- and if you've gone that far, why not at least try to meet the "rule of three" to make it at least seem more intentional than lazy?

Anyhow, I'll give Vol. 2 a try in the near future. ( )

This started off shaky for me. I didn't immediately warm up to the characters and thought the dialogue was terrible. However, the more I got into the story, the more fun I had reading it. The queens are really interesting and sometimes funny characters. There was a lot of set-up for future storylines and intrigue. Betty is hilarious and I am very interested in Violet's story arc. The dialogue still falls a bit short for me - it's not subtle at all - but the fun of the story helped me overlook it so far. And the best aspect of the comic is the complete challenge to traditional gender stereotypes. These women love booze, sex, swearing, drugs, violence, and making their own paths in the world, with no apologies or question. I also love that this isn't presented as an anomaly in the story; the other mercenaries are similarly wild and interesting. ( )

So I came across this graphic novel on a lark: I Googled something to the effect of ‘best Dungeons & Dragons graphic novel’, and reddit kindly directly me to Kurtis J. Wiebe’s Rat Queens. And by the Flying Squid God N'Rygoth is it good. It’s funny. It’s gorgeous. It has more characterization in one volume than most fantasy novels have in a trilogy. It’s not the sword & sorcery graphic novel we deserve, but the one we need.

The blurb on the back cover described it as 'Buffy meets Tank Girl in a Lord of the Rings world on crack!’, which is pretty adroit as summaries go (although I’d nitpick and say the humor is a bit more in line with Firefly than BTVS.) It’s gory. It’s irreverent. None of the characters can go more than four panels without some vile profanity being uttered. And while I actually really don’t think that every post-Tolkien work of fantasy needs to be 'modern’ a la Game of Thrones, gritty and visceral and 'realistic’, Rat Queens shows you how to do it and still have fun. The universe borrows heavily from the mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons (with a few glib shout-outs), so don’t expect any kind of mysterious fantasy here; the Rat Queens are basically RPG characters. Thankfully, though, more in the vein of BioWare than Bethesda.

The characterization is actually surprisingly good, given the economy of space a comic book format imposes, and each Rat Queen is far more than her fantasy archetype. The dynamics between the characters, protagonists and otherwise, feel natural.

If this is what Image comics are about than I am all for it. I’m really not sure what else I could ask for. ( )

Really enjoyed this graphic novel. Is it wrong that I want to join the Rat Queens? ( )
