It: Chapter Two--now a major motion picture! Stephen King's terrifying, classic #1 New York Times bestseller, "a landmark in American literature" (Chicago Sun-Times)--about seven adults who return to their hometown to confront a nightmare they had first stumbled on as teenagers...an evil without a name: It. Welcome to Derry, Maine. It's a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made twenty-eight years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city's children. Now, children are being murdered again and their repressed memories of that terrifying summer return as they prepare to once again battle the monster lurking in Derry's sewers. Readers of Stephen King know that Derry, Maine, is a place with a deep, dark hold on the author. It reappears in many of his books, including Bag of Bones, Hearts in Atlantis, and 11/22/63. But it all starts with It. "Stephen King's most mature work" (St. Petersburg Times), "It will overwhelm you...to be read in a well-lit room only" (Los Angeles Times).… (més)

So this was and still is the scariest book I have ever read. And I read it after I saw the movie. There is so much more to the book then the movie and it is WAY scarier. I could only read this in the middle of the day when my husband was home cause it was that scary lol. ( )

Summary: Childhood friends return to their hometown to face-off against a monster that menaced them as children.

My Rating: 3/5

This book is told in dual timelines. We see the children fighting the monster and the adults fighting the monster. There is also so much discussion in this book about growing up and things we lose from childhood. There is a great discussion about the fears of children which tend to be concrete like witches, monsters, zombies, etc compared to adults who have more existential fears. Am I living the life I was meant to? Is there a God? Am I in the right job? Are my kids okay? Along these lines there was also the discussion of our loss of magical thinking as adults. As children magic is a given. As adults we typically don't believe in magic and when something magical happens to us we reject it because we have more concrete minds. This ability to believe in magic gives the children an advantage when fighting the monster as children. As adults, they can barely wrap their mind around the fact a monster exists because adult minds just don't accept such things. I absolutely loved these discussions about adult-hood vs childhood in this book.

The dynamic friendships were the best part of It. I loved seeing the friendships grow between these misfit kids all with different backgrounds and different stories and I loved how the loyalty and friendship remained even once the kids returned as adults.

This book is a long book but there were certain elements in the story that I thought could have used more explanation and there were other elements that I found overdone. I often struggle with King's style because he is so wordy and he goes off on side roads that may be interesting but don't always add much to the story.

This book has sexual content, gore, and extensive racism. Sometimes it added to the story but sometimes I felt like it was there more for shock value.

I really love the depth of the characters. Even the monster was given depth and I thought that added to the story.

At the end of the day I just have a complex relationship with the books by King. I find them long, wordy, and meandering but also conceptually brilliant. I also find that sometimes the content of his books is bordering the line of what I feel comfortable consuming and that is especially a problem for me when it doesn't add to the story. I don't mind fatphobia, homophobia, racism, gore, and sexual content that is fundamental to the story being told but often, with King, I don't feel that it is. ( )

It took a very long time but I finally finished the audio book version of It. I did enjoy it quite a lot but there were some places when it just felt overly long. But, for a book of this size, I imagine it would have to at some point.

I'm still not afraid of clowns! ( )

The terror, which would not end for another twenty-eight years - if it ever did end - began, so far as I know or can tell, with a boat made out of a sheet of newspaper floating down a gutter swollen with rain.
