Libby and her Aunt Lobo are both preparing to recite the Pledge of Allegiance—Libby in class, and Aunt Lobo at her citizenship ceremony. This is a great story of what the pledge means to immigrants. Author’s Note.

This story is very personal since the author and her daughter wrote the book. This story is based off a true story from their aunt. Lobo, Libby's great aunt, passed her citizenship test and is very excited to have to say the pledge at the end of the week. In order to help her, Libby will say the pledge at her school the day before. They practice together all week and Libby is kind enough to explain to Lobo the meaning of the pledge and how it is said at her school. This story is a great representation of how many people feel when they are becoming U.S. citizens. ( )

I thought this book was nice, it shows the excitement of people becoming citizens, as well as shows students learning the Pledge. It's a very patriotic book, I think it would be good to read it to kids around July fourth, when explaining what immigrants are to students, and to help kids practice the Pledge of Allegiance. The book repeats the Pledge a few times, so I think this would be a good way for younger children to practice the Pledge. I would recommend this book to a friend, I think it would be beneficial to have in a classroom. ( )

I enjoyed this book for a few reasons. The first reason being how relatable the story is to many children and families. In this story, a Grandmother had come over from mexico years ago but wanted to officially become an American Citizen. To officially become a citizen of the united states, she needed to go to a special ceremony and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Ironically, the granddaughter had to learn the Pledge of Allegiance for school during that same week. The two of them practiced saying it together while sharing stories and memories and at the end the granddaughter stood up with the grandmother at the special ceremony and they said the Pledge together. The second reason why I enjoyed this book was how I could feel the sincerity between the grandmother and granddaughter. The grandmother was telling the granddaughter how important this was to her and what an impact America made on her when she moved here from Mexico. Lastly, the illustrations really made the reader connect to the words, which i think is a very important aspect of picture books. I definitely recommend this book to all elementary classrooms. ( )

Libby's great aunt, Lobo, is about to become a U.S. citizen. When she shares with her class that when she becomes a U.S. citizen she has to say the Pledge of Allegiance in front of the court. Libby practices with her great Aunt and she practices with her class as they learn about the importance and meaning behind the pledge. ( )
