The heroic son of Poseidon makes an action-packed comeback in the second must-read installment of Rick Riordan's amazing young readers series. Starring Percy Jackson, a "half blood" whose mother is human and whose father is the God of the Sea, Riordan's series combines cliffhanger adventure and Greek mythology lessons that results in true page-turners that get better with each installment.

In this episode, The Sea of Monsters, Percy sets out to retrieve the Golden Fleece before his summer camp is destroyed, surpassing the first book's drama and setting the stage for more thrills to come. ( )

After another expulsion from a school, Percy ends up back at Camp Half-Blood for the summer. When disturbing dreams of Grover in danger visit Percy at night, he sets off with Annabeth and a new companion Tyson to the Sea of Monsters to save their satyr friend.

I liked this second volume of the Percy Jackson series better than the first. The writing isn't great and sometimes the jokes are really cheesy (and interestingly, some of them seem to be aimed at adults-- I don't think 12 year olds know who Dean Martin is-- in fact, I don't either), but the characters have grown on me since the first volume and their adventures seem more entertaining. The journey Percy takes this time is pretty obviously inspired by Homer's epic The Odyssey, as the things Percy and his friends encounter follow Odysseus's travels almost exactly. For someone familiar with Homer's classic, it was a little predictable, but it was interesting to see how Riordan updates The Odyssey for his modern heroes.

Again, the book explores the various familial relationships the characters have and Riordan writes about the theme with a lot of empathy and sensitivity. I liked seeing the different relationships the half-bloods had with their godly parents and how each child faced their own set of issues with their mother or father. It added a deeper dimension to this otherwise light and carefree series.

These are very fun and quick reads. You can't really go into them expecting a lot of depth or nuance, but the characters are likeable and I'm interested in seeing how Riordan handles the Greek myths. At this point, I'm definitely hooked enough to read the rest of the books. ( )

Humans don't exist on the same level as the immortals. They can't even be hurt by our weapons. But you, Percy--you are part god, part human. You live in both worlds. You can be harmed by both, and you can effect both. That's what makes heroes so special. You carry the hopes of humanity into the realm of the eternal. Monsters never die. They are reborn from the chaos and barbarism that is always bubbling underneath civilization, the very stuff that makes Kronos stronger. They must be defeated again and again, kept at bay. Heroes embody that struggle. You fight the battles humanity must win, every generation, in order to stay human.
