"Rick Dial has the potential to be a hero. He just doesn't know it yet. Rick's high school football team couldn't be stopped when he was leading them as their quarterback. He was going to Syracuse on a scholarship. But then his dad abandoned them and a terrible accident left him crippled.Certain his old life is completely lost, Rick spends months hiding away in his room playing video games. He achieves the highest scores on so many games that he'sapproached by a government agency who claims to be trying to thwart a cyber attack on America that would destroy the technological infrastructure of the entire country. The agents say that the quick-thinking of a quarterback coupled with Nick's gaming experience make him perfect for this assignment. The problem is that there are no extra lives and this isn't just a game. but Rick doesn't have many other options at the moment. Entering The Realm gives Rick the one thing he thought he'd never have again: a body that's as fast and as strong as he ever was before the accident. But the more time he spends in The Realm, the more questions he has. What secrets are these agents keeping from him? What really happened to his father? How many others have gone into The Realm already. and failed? And perhaps most important, is he the hero they think he is?"--… (més)

Good beginning to a series that I'll continue reading. Some of the writing is skewed a little young, but it is not too distracting from an interesting story. ( )

I am a huge fan of the Last thing I remember series by same author so was a bit disappointed with this as it was like Avatar meets Tron.
I am a die-hard science fiction geek so the concept of a crippled star quarterback being roped into entering an evil terrorist mastermind's mind generated computer world seemed like an okay idea. Unfortunately, it is Rick in the real world who is far more interesting and story worthy than Rick in the Realm.
I am not a fan of computer games and found many of the passages describing his battles with alien creatures so boring that I skipped them. His life on the outside with his missing father, adoring 8 year old brother, stoic mother and ever puzzling government agents was much more entertaining. Even the awkward confrontation with his ex-girlfriend after he has sulked in his room and ignored her and his friends while feeling sorry for himself for 4 months was more interesting than battling spider worms, crocodile soldiers and purple dragon men! All this being said the boys at my school will probably lap this up and I WILL read the next one in the series to see how he gets on. ( )

Rick Dial was an unflappable, unstoppable quarterback for his Putnam Hills High School team until a car accident crushed his legs and made him dependent on crutches to even hobble 100 meters. Unsure of who he is without his athletic gift, and embarrassed by his weakness, Rick retreats to the safety of his bedroom where he throws himself into video games and masters every game he plays. One day, while hobbling down the street, he is abducted by a government agency who convince him that the skills he displays during video play; coolness, quick thinking, and fearlessness are exactly the skills they need to combat a Russian cyberthreat to America known as the Realm. They want Rick to enter the Realm, and defeat the crazy genius who is masterminding the plot to control and disrupt American computer systems.
The biggest drawback is that, although Rick's body is fully functioning within the Realm, any injuries he sustains while in there are real, and when he withdraws from the Realm, the injuries remain. If he is killed while inside the Realm, he will remain in a coma forever in the real world.
This is book one of a trilogy, guaranteed to be loved by those who enjoyed The Matrix or Ender's Game. ( )
