Here is a book that sets our worship, sacraments, communion and language of God back on track. In a day when refinement of method and quality of experience are the guiding lights for many Christians, James Torrance points us to the indispensable who of worship, the triune God of grace. Worship is the gift of participating through the Spirit in the incarnate Son's communion with the Father, writes Torrance. This book explodes the notion that the doctrine of the Trinity may be indispensable for the creed but remote from life and worship. Excellent short text text on Christian worship. Torrance discusses and contrasts unitarian and Trinitarian worship, pointing out that many Christians who would say they are Trinitarian are functionally unitarian in their practice. He also examins the many practices of baptism and the Lord's Supper (communion, the Eucharist) and puts forth an outstanding presentation on the gender discussions about God. ( )

Those who seek a Biblical exploration of worship in its broad sense will find much to ponder in this book. As a theology of worship it falls outside the corpus of literature flowing from Vatican II and outside the typical accents of Protestant writers in the give-God-glory and feel-the-Spirit traditions. It is thus a somewhat unique treatment of the topic.

This text provides a wonderful foundation into the core of trinitarian theology as it is applied practically and pastorally to Christian life. Torrance must be commended for his ability to take the central doctrinal belief of the Christian faith and show with simplicity its usefulness for understanding worship, community and grace. Worship, Community and the Triune God of Grace will prove to be a wonderful introduction into the theology of worship, trinitarian theology, and trinitarian ecclesiology at the parish, Bible college or seminary level.
